Because to me (essentially) they’re NOT occupying “my state” they’re occupying “that city” which to me is effectively a foreign land. (Even though it’s IN my state and I’m kind of a part of that city’s economy. These aren’t sophisticated thinkers.)

Great point. Logic is lost on them.
They're just alienated from how a majority of the country lives, and it seems frightening and (quite literally) foreign to them.
