worked at an independently owned aveda salon as front end - owners went out of town and left their stylist daughter as "manager". she screamed at me in front of customers until i was sobbing and walked out. owner called the next day and begged me to come back. hahahah, absolutely not, i made $8/hr

the daughter called around to every salon in town and told them not to hire me, despite me being very good at my job and loving the work. they subsequently lost every assistant and front end girl because word got around what they'd done to me.

Nurse here, 2 of the techs on the previous shift are roommates, they left work on Friday due back Monday,1 of them didn’t go home but went to his girlfriend’s & came to work from there on Monday, his roommate didn’t show up for the shift so he ran home on break & found him dead.

So he had to wait for ems etc & our boss wanted to know what time he was coming back to finish his shift. She really thought the guy who found his friend & roommate dead was going to come back in because she said “ you only get time off for death of immediate family”

Same boss, the tech that worked on adolescent psych got her arm broke from a patient. The tech that worked with me on geripsych was 7momths pregnant. We had total care patients that were physically demanding. Also the techs were getting tired of being pulled to adolescent & there was no continuity.

So I said to my tech maybe talk to the boss to put you down on adol for the 6 weeks the other tech is going to be out & that would bring her right up to maternity leave. So she asked it was told if she couldn’t do the job she was hired for she should quit.

So I went to talk to boss lady to clarify it was my suggestion & not her unable to do her job on Geri. Boss told me so what if she loses the baby she can’t take care of the ones she’s got. I had to quit.

An idiot telling me to “follow the chain of command” in my partnership firm. I requested and got a lateral transfer but still a glass ceiling.

Got a poor performance review from a manager for "not being transparent and trustworthy" because rather than calling him out in front of *his* bosses for stupid shit in meetings I would talk to him later one-on-one.

As a temporary secretary (military) I was told if I smiled more and learned how to make coffee I could go a lot further. My husband was told if he lost his accent (Spanish is his native language) he would have a higher chance of promotion (military).

I came in for the 5 pm shift to find the afternoon waitress crying behind the line. Turned out that the day manager had been putting his hands on her. That asshole had already gone home and left the mess for the night manager to deal with, when the waitress' husband came in looking for blood.

Manager tried to frame me for something as an intimidation tactic (she enjoyed lording over the team members). I looked her in the eye and basically dared her to try it, because I keep receipts. She never tried that again.

Summer job in college, she was upset her crush wanted me. So she started up w/me. More she picked, more I flirted w/him. 1 day he gave me the food she bought him. She got mad, we argued, she muffed me! Needless to say, somebody’s ass was whooped that day AND someone that’ll do it again was fired!

Stuff for the CEO and his wife (who ran her own company out of the same office). Then the guy who did almost zero work (only placed/picked up the occasional catering order for fancy client meetings) decided to start just doing zero work so they tried to get me to take over catering AS WELL.

I couldn’t quit (desperately needed the experience and NO ONE was hiring) so they fired me for poor job performance. I almost asked them which exactly of the 3.5 jobs they had me doing was I doing poorly. It was only a few months so I left them off my resume.

Answering his phone call, interrupting the answer to the support email I got 5 minutes before, he was cc'd and having to explain that had I not answered his call, the support question would have been answered already.

I worked at a hardware store for two weeks. The manager/owner of the store didn't want the responsibility, to put it mildly. On my second day there, I did one step out of order for the end of day count, and she called every employee up to the front to watch her berate me.

I literally struggle to pick one that’s the worst… Hardest I ever quit was after being reprimanded for not taking out an overloaded, several hundred lb trash cart out by myself because I decided working 1.5 hours late to secure a $10k+ order and then getting home to my family was more important.

Yikes! I usually worked for parents/adult siblings. Those fights were never based in the business decisions. It was always something from Thanksgiving 30 years ago or something. "I'm sorry he took the last roll in 1995, but can you approve my time off before I head out?"

My first & only retail job. Manager would work out 3x a week and walk across to BP, grab some clothes from the table, and change into them. At the end of her shift, she'd take off the clothes, PUT THEM BACK & leave in her workout clothes She was alsp using the s slur against my coworker for months.

When we reported her, she tried to act like I was the one who'd used the slur against my friend and coworker.

When my dad went into in home hospice my boss didn't see why I needed a work from home when possible & no traveling. But, I did get it for the 3 weeks he had until he died. Then when the funeral was scheduled she only gave me 1/2 day of leave, because it was local, so why would I need more time?

Former boss - My coworker was having a seizure on the floor in the break room. My boss stepped over her to get something out of the fridge and then went back to her office. Former boss at another job gave me a performance review with a seal puppet (seriously).

I had a boss who would instruct me to do a certain report a specific way and then, when I did it that way, would come over to my desk and, with a "I'm being VERY patient" voice, say, "May I ask WHY you did this report in this specific way?? See this and this? Is there a REASON you did it that way??"

Oh, she was a peach. She'd insist I sit with her in her cube while she did her job -- wouldn't let me go back to my desk because "I might want to ask you something" -- and then get pissed at me because I wasn't passing along completed tasks in good time.

A former manager called me into work when I had laryngitis to try and convince me to withdraw my two-week notice. That same manager called a month or so after my last day to see if I'd be willing to come back.

I was 17 in customer service at a grocery. They brought in another cashier from another store (older than me) and had me train her to do the CS *manager* job. They told me I was too young for the position (but had me train her?!). Then she took $100 out of my till, off camera, and I got fired.

Speaking of Groc stores-when I was 15 I got a job at local grocery, my first day so proud wore my favorite pink sweater and jean skirt (the ‘90s😊). My middle aged boss told me how grown up I looked and he would be distracted by my outfit. 😳 he kept doing crap like this and I would ignore him.

One day I told him to stop, that he was an old man and leave me alone. Next day he came to work and accused me of stealing cigarettes (I wasn’t) for my boyfriend (didn’t have one). Told me he had me on video. He pressured me for hours to confess. Started to doubt myself but held firm. Told my dad.

Who paid him a visit. Next day told my dad I didn’t want to go back. My dad said you’re going back, no creep is going to take your job. I went in and the guy had been fired by the owner. Good dads make a difference.

I audited 3months of commissions and boss had shorted them 11k, 9k, and 8.5k in previous 3 months. He also did fake expenses for 5k on a project. Went to owner with proof, he said he couldn’t fire him yet, so I quit.went to competitor and took all my business. (That theft made owner more $$)

I managed all web communications for a DC nonprofit when my mom was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer. I had already shown I could work remotely. My boss and her boss were over 65 and relied on me for ad hoc tech support, so they refused to let me work from Vermont for the 6mos Mom had left.

Note: Other staff were already working remotely, from other states, in different time zones. They just had better bosses.

I used to work for a large art supply store in NJ and a lot of our customers were artists. We got a new manager who bought a lot of Elke Somer paint-by-numbers kits and were angry that we weren’t selling them to our customers. She didn’t understand that artists don’t do paint-by-numbers.

I had a boss who was so dumb that he asked me what 7+4 was. When I said “11”, he looked at me skeptically , counted on his fingers and said, “You’re right, you’re right”. I knew right then that I needed to start looking for another job.

I was working in retail selling bed & bath necessities & a couple of truckers came in looking for new mattress covers & pillows. They started following me & cornering me in the sections. My (woman) manager walked by &I called her name. She looked at me, laughed, said, “not my problem,” & walked away

An hour later, when the male manager came in, they were still there. He intervened & banned them from the store. When I told him what happened he made me have a sit down with the other manager where she blamed me for the situation bc “she’s always gotta be Ms Customer Service.” She quit that day.

There's so many to choose from but I'll go with this one… The HR manager who attempted to deceive a co-worker into writing and signing a false statement with a view to using it as evidence against me in court as she wanted to prevent me from winning a case against the company for unpaid wages.

I was working at a Taco Cabana and I was somehow the only one scheduled to work a lunch shift on Sunday after church got out. The manager sat in his office and laughed at me when about two congregations walked in.

I ran out of food to serve in about thirty minutes but I also had to work the front register and drive thru. I tried to shut the drive down to give myself some cushion but he yelled at me instead. I was trying to cook when someone behind me started laughing and yelling at me.

I was the most senior nurse in my clinic. My manager was harassing another nurse who had an ADA accommodation (with a clear eye to firing her or driving her off). I defended her and the manager started a harassment campaign against me. /1

When I applied for a transfer to another clinic in the same company, she thanked me and told me I'd made her day, then went around clinic telling all the employees that she was having the best day she'd had since she started the job. About a third of the clinical staff left after me. /2

HR spent a year making half hearted gestures trying to stabilize the situation. By the time they finally had her escorted out of the building, they'd also lost a good practice director (a position that clinic had trouble keeping filled). ///

And just dumb. Who goes after someone with ADA protections (it was literally the ADA accommodation she was after her about). Thing is the accommodation has a review date, she could have waited a couple months and told HR that the clinic couldn't accommodate anymore, but instead she harassed her.

I was working at a car dealership in Southwest Georgia that was the definition of toxic. Hostile coworkers, strife between departments, and a manager with anger issues. He never missed an opportunity to insult or belittle people on the sales staff. Turnover was high. I lasted three months.

The turnover was ridiculously high. Not even a year after I left, it was sold and everyone was replaced.

I worked for many years in large corporations constantly under the threat of downsizing. I lost my job and a year later was rehired. They made me work as a contractor without benefits for a year to earn my old job back. I was allowed to keep my vested pension benefits but could not earn more.

Harassment every day. Filed complaint and was told they supported me but then did nothing. I ended up resigning and finding something better.

Came up with a fix that saved the company £1000s a week. Line manager who most directly benefitted shouted at me about it for 15 minutes in front of the whole office for reasons that never made sense.

I transported an animal on behalf of my employer with an extremely bad, emergency urinary infection. I got urine all over myself and the car (not upset, comes with the gig). A few days later saw his care staff in full tyvek suits. He had an advanced MRSA infection. Employer didn’t bother telling me.

In the early 80s I had a summer job as a hospital transporter and had to bring bring a patient down to radiology. The patient was on the AIDS ward. No one knew anything about AIDS at the time but everyone else had PPE on and I didn't even have gloves. No one even told me.

I could go on, but they belittled me, mocked me, sulked like a child when I proved them wrong. I also worked for my father for ten miserable years.

It was in the late 70s. I asked the leadman at a machine shop I worked at, what I had to do to get a raise. I had worked there for 18 months. He said, get on your knees and beg. I left on the spot.

Mine walked 6 feet ahead of me at most times (traveling while in sales) and opened the door for himself and let it close on me. There are so many more examples of this awful man.

In my early 20s I worked at Johnston and Murphy & the manager FAMOUSLY was an absolute psychopath; at one point he wrote me up for wearing the same colored shirt two days in a row (he said it made it look like I was wearing the shirt two days in a row which he considered a dress code violation)

Had a boss make me do an expansion plan for a distribution center. With my plan we were able to fit 75% more product in the same space just by reorganizong and so didn't need to actually pay for more space. Saved the company vast amount of money . She took 100% of the credit for it in the meeting.

The director called us into her office and forced us to watch a bestiality video because she thought it was funny. 😒 I refused to go into her office again and she ended up getting me fired. I was still able to collect unemployment after I told the VA labor office about years of harassment.

When I was in my 20’s I worked for a company that sold graphic art supplies in NYC. My boss took me to a biz con and at the end of the day pressured me to come up to his hotel room with him. I declined. Several weeks later he falsely accused me of over ordering supplies and fired me. 1/

I filed a case in unemployment court and won. He was a disgusting creature.

But he and his wife were horrible. Gave me full time workload (including their intense bookkeeping?), but also never wanted to pay a dime more than my 20 hours a week. So when I quit, I texted and left a resignation letter same day. She ran down with wet hair paranoid but I was already gone 💨

I was once accused, on threat of being written up of being falling down drunk at a work party during which I had held a single drink but had consumed none (as I didn't drink at all). There was no fighting this man. All I could do was insist I hadn't been drinking & offer witnesses to my sobriety.

He also once got mad at me for saying I needed to leave work to go to the hospital to get checked out after I was in an 4 car accident that had cause a huge backup the MA turnpike. I went to work because I'd been headed there, my car was drivable and I was 23 and scared.

I worked ground logistics at a major airport. One time, the team genius was working the lavatory truck and decided it would be twice as efficient to open all the valves at once--on a 747 that just crossed the Atlantic. The result was messy, to say the least. It looked like the plane had shat.

My supervisor immediately called all work to a halt and got everybody away from the spill, then called the station manager to have him inform HAZMAT of the situation. The problem is, the station manager was a bean-counting ass-hat who wouldn't even pay to put working brakes on our tugs.

Rather than pay the fine for creating a hazardous spill, the station manager suggested we rinse it all into a storm drain with the hose on the potable (drinking) water truck and go on working. My supervisor called him an idiot and said he wouldn't let us go back to work until hazmat came.

Still unwilling to pay the fine, the station manager decided to solve the problem himself. He grabbed a yard-size trash can and a snow shovel and drove his brand new white pickup truck down to the ramp. We were confused watching him approach, until we saw what was in his truck bed.

Picture a crew of workers in reflective vests all perched on a catwalk cheering and clapping as we watch our station manager literally shovel shit into a can with nothing but nitrile gloves and a snow shovel. Anyway, that outfit shut down pretty soon after that. I wonder why? 🤷‍♂️

Fraud, theft, assault, harassment… too many to list. Bad managers made me a good manager.

My mother died the end of July. During my 6 month review (January-June) I was told my mother's death had an impact on my job performance.

I was a cocktail waitress and bartender in the early 80s. SO many I can't even count-- but one of my managers did try to strangle my then supervisor with a phone cord and I had to go for him full on. Crazy night. He ended up going out a window and jumping on a car.

I had a very short lived job at a science materials supplier as a customer service rep. The owner was so abusive - he’d lock people out of their computers and dare them to leave, walk past and pull the power cords out of the monitors. I dealt with that stress for a month. How, I don’t know.

Linda was the boss. I was her number one. We had a staff of 150+. One morning she said to me, "Why do you waste time learning all their names? None of them are going to be here long enough for it to matter what you call them." She also always included MBA in her signature.

My mother in law died, and when I told my boss that I would be taking a few days off to help my husband through it, her response was “well OUR dog died this weekend, so we’re all going through things and showing up for work.” I have many stories about this crazy woman.

She was absolutely a malignant narcissist. One time I was eating a delicious apple, and someone asked if it was a new variety that was all over the news (cosmic crisp!) and we chatted about apples for 2 seconds and how delicious they are, she chimed in “they give ME gas” wtf 😬

It's incredible how much these people can blend in on the surface (e.g. at a job interview or dating) and then the horror sets in... 😬 I hope she's still not your manager.

Two explanations: 1) She didn't have a dog. 2) She did - for her kids - but she actually killed the dog because she's a psychopath.

The dog was at the office every day and it was also crazy! They had to lock the front door because the dog bit the UPS guy about 4x. To be fair, there were a ton of red flags, but I needed the job.

Then she made the entire office participate in a funeral service for her dog. It was insane.

Oooh my ex-boss tried to bully the team into buying gifts off her daughter's wedding registry. So many lines crossed. These people should not be holding any job of any kind.

We had that happen -- a VP of our company was getting married for the 2nd or 3rd time, and she put up a list of very expensive gifts she wanted for her bridal shower, seriously expecting the low-wage worker bees to get all that for her. Did I mention her 4-carat engagement ring?

She made us write our memories (of the dog the bit the UPS guy) on slips of paper that she tied to an enormous balloon and then let go. We live on Puget Sound, someone mentioned the whole environmental impact of that and well…😂

My workplace was wrecked by a hurricane, which caused severe and widespread flooding across a very large area. The building had a couple of feet of water throughout. Once the water receded, we were told we were expected to show up and help demo the building if we wanted to keep getting paid.

Way back in high school I worked in a movie Theater and my boss had anger issues and would chuck pkgs of twizzlers at employees IN FRONT of patrons,he also made me go stay with his wife when he went out of town and threatened my job if I didn’t. This was the 80’s

Being told that the boss needs to see that I can do the work before I get the promotion and pay raise. Only to talk to the Boss after two months and he had no idea that I'd been doing the extra work.

I went to the ER with uncontrolled bleeding, dropped in a pool of blood at the front door. I called my boss to let her know I wasn't coming in; she was mad. When finally I woke up, I discovered my boss had posted my position. The description: word for word the first 3 lines of my resume.

I was once trapped in a small truck cab with my bosses boss while he held forth with little conservative brain nuggets about things like how solar panels were causing a net global cooling that threatened a new ice age.

A white female manager told me to wash her lunch dishes. I got fired for insubordination for refusing. It was fine with me. They went out of business a year later. Ancestors.
