Haha, in Maine we have Vye-enna (Vienna), MAD-rid (Madrid), and Cal-us (Calais).
Cairo, Illinois would like a word
Colorado, too. They pronounce it "Byoona Vista". supposedly because immigrants couldn't pronounce it correctly, so it stuck. Annoys me no end. Lived here most my life.
I grew up on the western slope of CO, where Pueblo is pronounced pyoo-eblo. But then again, creek is crick and wash is worsh.
My dad said "Pee-eblo". My mom said "worsh". Grandma said "crick." I'm still trying to re-parent myself from the trauma.
Things may have changed from when I was a kid, but there is a town in Arizona—of all places—called Casa Grande, which the locals of the 1980s pronounced “Cassagrand.”
(I can handle the short “i” in “Vista,” but by some phonetic alchemy I cannot even begin to fathom, “Buena” gets rendered as “Byoo-nuh.” That’s not even the sound those letters make in English!)
Did the mispronunciation come from them spelling it out?
That’s how we said it in South Jersey, too🤣 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Buena,_...
In Colorado there’s basically a latitude line where pronunciation of Spanish words changes from English to Spanish rules.
Ask folks in Maine how they pronounce “Calais.”
I will not, sir.
Bueller? Bueller?
imbue? a road on the West Side of Columbus called Trabue (TRAY-byoo)? of course, Ohio has a Versailles pronounced Ver-SALES & a Worcester pronounced correctly but spelled "Wooster" 🙅♂️
Thanks for bringing that back into my hearing memory.
Versailles, Indiana is another case. Did you know there's a BER-lin, New Jersey?
And Pulaski. Ever been to Arab, Alabama?
to say nothing of canaan valley, wv
@normative.bsky.social that's how Coloradans in Buena Vista, CO pronounce it
@normative.bsky.social (don't get me started on Prescott (rhymes with biscuit), AZ)
I’m still trying to figure out how McGaheysville is pronounced “me-GAK-eez-vil.”
Bois D’arc, Missouri, pronounced BO-dark.
If your eyes stop twitching when Virginians say “Buena Vista”, you can head over to Buena, NJ, and retwitch them.
