Currently house shopping in LA. My wife and I make a combined $300K a year and we essentially can only afford townhomes about 30 miles from where we work, with family help for the down-payment.

Ugh. Sorry man. I wish we had focused, functional governments at all levels that were laser-focused on this issue. So many bad things flow from the fact there is not nearly enough housing.

In California, and especially Los Angeles, there are a lot of factors at play. But the main one is we just do not build enough housing.
