My 96 yo mother is Catholic. She is nothing like them. She has been a strong protector of the poor, LGBTQIA, etc, forever. I asked how she makes peace with the Old Testament being homophobic. She said she only cares what Jesus said. They obviously don't care what Jesus wanted.
