Maryland students struggle with math, leaving a generation in trouble
I don't think math can be successfully taught in our factory model of education. Some brains are naturally years "behind" in understanding or even caring about math. If they spend years being pummeled by worksheets while feeling stupid, they will hate math.
Most teachers are heroic; in no way should we put blame on their shoulders. However, how do we (including school administrators) know how much our teachers know about math and, more importantly, teaching math? How are teachers’ math competency levels measured, publicly reported and remediated?
