The one benefit missed in that verbal spew is the education of the next generation. Grant funded research not only gets the world innovative products and services but also train the next scientist or innovator for new innovations.

Doesn’t the same thing apply to big pharmaceutical companies? Taxpayers spend millions of $$ to support the research and development of new drugs. Should we own the patents?

True with every major industry in some aspect. The government, using our taxes, subsidizes a wide variety of industries. Id love to see this administration make the same argument about agricultural welfare, for example.

State control of the economy, including research scientists and universities which hold patents is unAmerican. Our “Best and the brightest” will go somewhere else.

Lutnick seems to think the government should operate like a private equity fund. All govt investments should make a profit, no consideration of social welfare.

We get the benefits of their research fool. The people who make the discoveries get the patents. That’s how it’s worked throughout time. The US is not a money making enterprise.

Just like Intel -- US gives lots of money in contracts, etc. so you have to give us ownership. Sounds to me like anything that gets financial support from the government will belong to the government. Traditional GOP thinking, right?

But it is not just giving universities money. Researchers get grants to give the government wants to fund.

The solution is obviously to destroy the research universities.

They seem determined to drive research and innovation out of the country.
