If they had done as you suggested, Trump wouldve been exonerated because there was no admissible evidence in the DOJ possession. And as soon as the DOJ had enough to secure an indictment - Trump filed to run, which meant that the DOJ had to hire a special investigator. Then Trump had SCOTUS.
Neither of those statements are true. The Biden DOJ started subpoenaing federal records from Trump officials right away. Trump delayed by suing at every step, claiming they were executive privilege. And then when he lost, he'd appeal. Each appeal took 2-3 months. Meanwhile the GOP stalled.
You realize that if they are federal records that must mean that they are held by federal government, no? There was more than enough evidence to start prosecution.
So if Democrats HAD refused the CR and closed the government, what kind of deal do you think they'd need to make with Republicans to get the 2/3rds majority necessary to reopen it over Trump's veto? Trump and Musk wanted the government shutdown because they had no intention of reopening it.
First, Republicans would have changed the rules for breaking the filibuster or passing laws with a simple majority (something that we weren’t able to do because of Manchin, and Sinema). Second, it would have forced the Republicans who always claim to be against deficits to vote for it, given that

You either fund it all or you stop funding it, you can’t choose regions. It’s already been tested in court with Trumb’s threats to stop funding to blue states. And I don’t know what you mean by veto, only the president can veto a bill, but if there is no bill there is nothing to veto, no?
Art III courts are not blue states which have sovereignty (and Congressionally allocated funds individually to each state) whereas the Art III courts don't. And I'm hoping you don't expect the judges, lawyers, and clerks in the 9th circuit to work for free just because Trump refuses to pay them.
The point is that you can’t selectively pick up a court to fund and not fund the rest; just like you can’t defund blue states only from getting federal education funds, also tested in court.
If the CR wasn't passed, the government would be closed until a new bill that funds the government was signed into law. That would be the bill he would veto.
And if he vetoed that bill the government would remain closed and he would get all the blame, no?
That doesn't reopen the government because it takes 2/3 of both chambers to override the veto. So the GOP could vote to reopen the government without a single Democratic vote, and Trump will veto. But they can pass legislation without a single Republican vote TODAY. But they don't want to.
There must be one or two sane Republicans still? Here and there comes pushback on certain issues like from Massey and Murkowski. Maybe enough can be convinced? Especially now that trump wants to destroy our economy and the stock market.
The sane Republicans were the Never-Trumpers and RINOs. They all left or got pushed out of the party... and definitely got pushed out of any offices they might have held. They're now independents or democrats and no longer have any sway at all over MAGA-GOP.

We only need a handful of R reps to impeach. They don't care about us, but those in purple districts can be made to care about their voters. Conviction is another matter, but imagine how much better opinion of the Dems would be if they were fighting back when the midterms come around.
