Home Depot and Lowe's share data from hundreds of AI-powered automated license plate reading cameras with law enforcement
I won’t be shopping there.
If ACE hardware and your local hardware company isn’t doing this, you may want to move your shopping
pretty confident locals aren't wasting money on AI shit. most Ace don't have stand alone stores ime, so any outside cameras are probably whatever cheap ones the strip mall owner installed
As a Lowe’s employee we basically work in a surveillance state all the time. Its super fun.
Spent a day setting up vendor-owned displays in a new Lowe's once. Saw their morning meeting. I'm never working for Lowe's.
Sadly I am 15 years in
WalMart has Flocks too
And that’s one reason I never buy anything from either of these stores.
They’re going to wish this never got out! #TeslaTime 💯🤬
Final nail in that coffin - will never go to those again
I do find the constant criminalization of customers to be the weirdest part of MBA brain.
Criminals expect others to also be criminals.
Home Depot setting money on fire so they can enjoy the taste of bigotry. Which I assume tastes like some kind of canned chicken salad with raisins and no salt or pepper
Remove Big Brother cameras everywhere. Contact your elected officials & organize against Govt. Overreach. This is easy Pork $ & does not help We The People!
Have it here at Lowe’s Seekonk, MA.
so, they want to lose money?
I hate Home Depot. CEO thinks Trump is the greatest. I already won't shop there, but good boycott target.
I don’t know of a hardware store that leans left. If anyone does, I would like to know.
Ace Hardware, here's your free advertising from home despot and lowes.
Goodbye Lowes & Home Depot 👋 This is a good time to shop our local hardware stores instead.
Ace all day every day
Now I understand why people have the license plate tinted covers on them.
Boycott Home Depot and Lowe’s
Why do they hate their customers
Do those tinted license plate covers work?
Just to be clear, I want to ensure that everybody is aware... Once you leave YOUR HOME DO NOT EXPECT PRIVACY... DO NOT EVEN EXPECT PRIVACY, TO A CERTAIN EXTENT — IN THE CONFINES OF YOUR OWN HOME. -ONE.💯🏡
Quick question... If they're in the retail business, then why would they be collecting license plate numbers? Why would they invest in any system with this capability — wouldn't regular cameras suffice? Home Depot & Lowes are about to blow their clientele, they're working with the CIA! -ONE.
Reporting on their own customers is a real shit move.
Every Ace Hardware store owner should run ads letting people know they can shop at Ace without fear of fascists.
Well fuck them both very much and yellow Ace Hardware
Argh. *hello Ace Hardware
I hate AI more with each passing day
Gotta love how these ppl find new ways to keep ppl out of their stores.
I guess they’re a duopoly run by moronic ideologues and truly don’t understand how damaging this will be to their core consumer. They’re shooting themselves in the face by cooperating with ICE. Especially since legal residents are targeted, all the time. Shareholders should be furious.
Damn. I had no idea. We'll soon be out of places to shop!
read as muc of the article as i could before paywall. they aren’t doing surveillance in order to share it with ICE. i dunno. this seems like bad reporting. " the sheriff’s office is able to tap into Flock license plate reading cameras at 173 different Lowe’s locations around the U.S….”
I buy all that shit on Amazon anyway.
Dang, now where am I supposed buy my warped, overpriced, dogshit lumber?
SHOP AT ACE HARDWARE
Went in to our local Ace and have never been. Saw the shelf of trump merch and walked out.
They're all individually owned and operated franchises. I have three nearby and one is trumpier than the other two, and also has the grumpiest employees on the planet (probably a total coincidence...). The good Ace stores have employees that actually know what their products do and how to use them.
Menards it is.
There is no good place to get hardware. The locals are as right wing as the national brands.
Minnesota Plywood?
My purchases are usually from sections other than lumber. But in my passing, I have never seen a 2x4 that wasn't visibly warped there.
Don’t trust companies, they love your money and hate you
Police state
Didn't think Home Depot could be any shittier, but here we are. Menards for life
@npr.org you can update that Home Depot story from yesterday
This is why I only shop at locally owned hardware stores.
I spend a ton of money Lowe’s. Let’s correct that I spent a lot. Won’t walk in either store again. My Ace hardware and local lumber yard will get my business
Same here!
Ace is the place with the helpful hardware folks. 👍
Same. I had already begun boycotting Home Depot long ago (and Walmart, Target, & Amazon the minute they trashed Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) but now I'll have to add Lowe's to the list.
Just so you know Lowe’s quietly ended DEI a few years ago. That was a pleasant work email To get ….
Dang! Thanks for letting me know. I'm late to the party, but my Lowe's boycott starts today.
This is actually helping me stop unnecessary spending. And I don’t miss it
Lowe's used to be preferable to Home Depot, but after this, yeah, Ace Hardware is the way to go. And they're a co-op, too!
I gave up on HD years ago when the then owner called democratic voters ignorant or something like that. Lowe’s is dead to me. And yes my local Ace has fantastic service.
I think Ace donates pretty heavily to Rs and right-wing politicians. Maybe not Home Depot level, but I do try and avoid them. Best I’ve found is Harbor Freight, but the selection isn’t nearly as large.
I think they balance contributions between Rs and Ds
scroll down to "Contributions by Source of Funds". the company itself doesn't donate anything, only individuals. below that, only one store donated in 2024
Ace is a retailer owned cooperative, so each store is independently owned, and their donations, if any, are individual, not corporate. Yes Small business guys to tend to lean libertarian/GOP but definitely look at your local one, not as a conglomerate, because they’re not.
Thanks, that is very useful. I did unfortunately look into the local owner and it is very rightwing so I guess I’ll still be driving across town but this is good to know.
I mean, small business dudes are generally people who cannot get along in a group and need to be in charge, so it’s a recurring problem. Also: see if your local Habitat for Humanity or recycling has a reuse/resource center. That benefits the community and saves money and is generally lefty.
"I think Ace donates pretty heavily to Rs and right-wing politicians." I've never heard this, source?
www.snopes.com/news/2025/03...
I just checked Opensecrets, and it's all from individuals if I'm reading this right. Which makes since, because Ace is a co-op, not a franchise or chain. Most of it came from one store in Jacksonville.
yep, all stores are locally owned. even if your local is owned by a shithead, your money goes back into the community, not to corporate investors
I already didn’t shop at HD. Now I don’t shop at Lowe’s.
Christ. looks like I’m going to ACE from now on.
Seems super fascist-enabling I dunno
So Menards then
Stop shopping there. They exist because of customers. Stop buying and making fascists possible.
Shop locally! Don’t give your business to these fascist.
How many ppl know that the LED lights on street poles, & in store parking lots are all cameras? Or that high schools coordinate with cops to have kids work surveillance & sting operations? This is not only kept hush hush, but the cops will silence ppl who speak out against them.
The public private surveillance system continues to expand unchecked, and might be this country's largest employer now. This country literally revolves around cops, & ppl don't even know the fraction of it. The police state is the government. That's what's controlling this country.
Just now ramping up 1984 was childs play
