On this day in 1998, Swissair Flight 111 crashed eight kilometres off the coast of Peggy's Cove, Nova Scotia. The plane hit the water at 555 km/h, killing all 229 on board. Over two million pieces of debris were recovered. Most bodies were identified by DNA profiling.

My then-wife and I heard it from Lower Sackville, fairly far from the crash site. A friend of mine had taken Swissair 111 on the previous flight, a couple of days earlier, and heard the news poolside in Geneva. It must have been a very strange feeling.
