My son- 27 yr old works for a small up and coming business. No insurance offered. Not all employers offer insurance and if smaller businesses are required to- there will be fewer small businesses, and fewer jobs.

That is exactly the situation the young lady who assisted me at the Walgreen's pharmacy said she is in. Lack of hours, lack of full-time status, lack of a consistent schedule to allow a 2nd job. Even if she had all of that, who is to say she could afford to use any health insurance she could get?

This was my experience at Starbucks. I was told about all the benefits, particularly health insurance at my interview. Weirdly enough, once I started working, those 40 hour weeks never materialized frequently enough to qualify.

I make above the average income and have insurance through my employer. For me and my two children I pay $500 a month for my “part” of that employer sponsored health insurance. Tell me again how someone working at Wal-Mart will be able to afford their “part” of employer sponsored health insurance?

Four years ago the same plan had a zero deductible but now I pay more with annual premium increases and they changed the deductible to $2500. I’ve never even hit the deductible each year it’s gone up. but I pay more out of pocket for worse coverage.

There seems to be no such thing as employer paid health care any longer for the average worker. Decades ago that was true. An example is you must work 40/wk to qualify but the employer only gives you 38 hrs. A form of this has happened to me several times in recent years. It’s frustrating!

Many years ago when I had a child with a life threatening illness, I worked and I was on Medicaid. I simply didn't make enough to afford private insurance and she needed life-sustaining care. She's nearing 30 so she is fine but it saved her life back in the day.
