I see why NATO members don't want to call this an armed attack, ie an Article 5 contingency. But @phillipspobrien.bsky.social is right. 17 yrs after Russia invaded Georgia, Western leaders still don't understand that Putin is provoked by weakness, not strength. Deterring him will require force.

Poland’s airspace was violated & they shot them down. I don’t see any weakness in that response. It wasn’t an attack, it was Russia testing them & they responded accordingly. If it was manned aircraft they would have escorted them out or shot them down if they failed to comply.

Another incident that occurred yesterday. Their planes may not have violated Qatari airspace but they launched missiles into it which did. bsky.app/profile/ship...

Doesn't help that NATO is just a loose alliance. These times require someone bold enough to step forward, lead them, and send a clear message to Putin

Given Trump’s obsession with the Nobel Peace Prize, just because Obama got one no doubt 🤷‍♂️, it’s not hard to surmise that Putin has worked out that America will not get directly militarily involved in Europe under Trump who will leave it up to the other NATO members to take on Russia’s aggression.

At this point, is Art 5 actually meaningful if the US were to choose to simply ignore it? (which I think they would right now, and would cause an immediate crisis for NATO which has so far tried to pretend nothing is really happening besides European countries being asked to contribute more funding)

I mean, wait until Israel carries out a public attack on Turkish territory, Turkey triggers Art 5, and the rest of NATO just say “no”

I'm convinced they understand it, but they are too cowardly to act. They hope for the problem to be solved "by itself" with time.

Its because they know that Trump will simply veto any triggering of A5, especially over something as 'small' as a few drones. Nato died the minute Trump got elected in 2024

Well, to be fair, Europe does not need to involve NATO to take its responsibilities and protect the sky over Ukraine. It would be obviously easier but the easy part is gone a long time ago (even before trump got re-elected imho)
