I think the word "fan" gets thrown around way too much. Like it's some kind of badge to be earned. I don't believe fanatacism is something to aspire to.

That may be the origin of the word, and true fanatics often sap the joy out of things, but I'm quite sure in common usage being fan usually just means having a strong interest in something.
