Under new voting bill, if a married woman has a different name from the one on her birth certificate she cant vote. Dear Sisters, don’t take your husband’s name
Under new voting bill, if a married woman has a different name from the one on her birth certificate she cant vote. Dear Sisters, don’t take your husband’s name
Seems from an era when men were the sole providers and more important than women. Whats wrong with giving our children our name? Or both names?
I’m applying for my passport. I’m wondering how hang it will take .
That means you have to pay the equivalent of a $160+ poll tax in order to vote.
Okay
Good on you to apply for it now.
I’m moving back to Australia this year Jen! Kinda done after 15 years. Can’t take this idiot anymore.
I don’t blame you.
Omg this was supposed to be on the hush. Lol.
😂
I checked today, 4-6 weeks supposedly.
My daughters took 3 weeks last month
I got mine within 4 weeks recently
Depends on whether leon and the other incels fucked it up yet
Exactly
Depriving a person of their last name is like making them disappear from life.
In Spain, children are named after their father and mother, and you can decide the order of their names.
I’m so glad I didn’t change my name when I got married. I’ve found that there’s no downside to my kids having a different last name than me. Everyone knows they’re my kids! And my name offers a small but important degree of separate identity from the beautiful but all-encompassing role of mom.
Never changed my name when I married. I was born with my surname and I'm going to die with my surname.
In Italy women don’t take husband’s last name
Same in Québec, Canada since 1981.
All these dumb weak men wanting to secure their power. It's pathetic but VERY REAL! Make sure you have your birth- and marriage certificate. This must apply to MEN who took their wife's/husband's name too, so spread the dire news wide.
We could do like in Iceland so my daughter’s las name would be Michellesdaughter and my son’s Michellesson. I raised them alone so it makes sense to me.
Hmmmm… News to me, interesting.
That's a common naming system in that part of the world.
I did research it. Pretty cool concept…
Nothing at all…There is no logic to it. The only point is to degrade women.
Well.... what are you going to do when you aren't allowed to have a bank account without a man's signature? That's also in Project 2025. Which roughly 35 M women voted for.
Banks aren't going to like losing all the money that belongs solely to a woman but I'll find a place for it.
My daughter has my last name (I wasn’t married when I had her) And now that I am married, I’ve kept my last name. My husband uses my last name on unofficial paperwork too, just because he likes it. 😉
Keep calling them out, sister.
Vance has been talking about "head of household voting." Guess the single crazy cat ladies like me won't get to vote...
Or fight this insane bill!
In Canada, at least in Alberta, even if you legally change your name, your birth name is always a legal name you can use. You can get ID in your birth name or your new name. This would negate that rule as a trans person could just get ID with their birthname. Since the trans community are targeted.
Next they will pass a law that married women MUST take their husband’s last name. See how it works?
And thus begins the population collapse in the Idiocracy. Gilead, I mean.
I'm still expecting them to rule consent is "DEI" 🦨
Guess we have to get used to proving we’re our children’s mothers at every step of their childhood, because our kids last names would be different? It’s the only reason I’ve added my husband’s. I’ve had to carry their birth certificates while traveling overseas prior to that.
The mother fills out the birth certificate in Illinois. I almost gave them my last name. 😅 Instead, my surname is their middle name but it was legally completely up to me.
I took my wifes last name, and she kept her first husbands last name fot the kids sake. We're both screwed. I'm a (was) a poll worker, but we have to be registered voters to be poll workers. Wait fot that chaos to play out.
My drivers license and SS card and VA card have all been updated with my new name. No way can we afford passports, besides that is Jim Crow poll tax crap. We are both on SS, fixed income and very worried about the stability of that right now.
Good you got that taken care of…It is indeed a poll tax..a REAL ID, now required, is only $30. Might be a better option.
I have Real ID, although I think the gold star was poorly thought out .
Where do you live that it’s only $30? Most be nice. Still won’t work, unless you have a birth certificate with a matching name.
Oregon. Some states it’s a less, others more. Depends on your State DL fees.
I’ve never seen one that low.
You shouldn't. To begin with, it's a custom of bygone era when women were treated like property more a kin to a goat
I think that a passport will work, if you have one. I have a REAL license and a passport but I'm considering legally changing my name to my birth certificate name.
That's insane!
Melania Knavs sponsored it so she wouldn’t be able to vote for her husband
Unless she gets a passport that shows both names.
In which you shell out $130. While the cost of a marriage license is between $35 to $150
Exactly. It’s a voting tax many women won’t pay because feeding their children is going to be harder now without school lunches, food stamps, health insurance and many simply don’t have the extra money or time.
They’ve taken away our right to reproductive healthcare. Now they are trying to take away our voting rights, what’s next our right to own property ?
You had to know that shit was next
Better yet, don't vote republican.
So all women will have their birth certificates checked before voting or just new voters? Either way imagine what kind of husbands these guys are.
So far, just new or if you move. They’re already discussing making everyone re-register, though.
They have added that if you have a passport you won’t have to change name to maiden name, but HOW FAR CAN YOU TRUST THAT STATEMENT?! It was given by (D) Rep Lori Trehan in House before the vote… hmmph 🙀🫣😳
Read the bill.
I don’t want to
They can take the documents we gave to take to get out True ID which is a birth certificate, marriage license etc
I got the new license has to show birth and marriage certificate and a bill or check/bank account statement for proof of address. No big deal. I'll do the same at the city clerk to reregister if necessary. I'm not getting bent out of shape
We need to see implementation. It certainly *could* disenfranchise some married women. It will definitely disenfranchise trans people in red states, that is one of the underlying goals. There are a growing amount of Republicans who want to repeal the 19th ammendment. I fear the Save Act.
I have a passport with my married name, which I think is as acceptable as my birth certificate which has my maiden name. Plus I live in blue WA. But I'll be shocked if red state implementation doesn't try to push the envelope here. Hope I'm wrong.
No. They can’t. A marriage license is not acceptable DPOC and cannot be used.
If you can’t use a marriage license to prove how you got from your birth certificate last name to your current lady make, then what do you use? I did this in California and TN yo prove my last name
Pretty much a passport.
For RealID which does not qualify from what I understand. How ironic is that? Marriage license reportedly not accepted as it's not a citizenship document.
I didn’t know. Wow it is so difficult
In a democracy all citizens have the right to vote. One vote each. Preferably on a Sunday when most people don't work. You also have the right to vote in advance by mail. On election day you can vote even if you have voted in advance. In that case your mail vote will be discarded.
What does the name have to do with your voting rights?
The next step is, only Republicans can vote. Democracy is dead.
Matrilineal family tree. Sons and daughters should keep mother's name 🙏
The Real ID is making women jump through hoops with name changes. A friend has already spent $600 in getting copies of forms and posting the name change in the newspaper for 24 hrs. Insane. It’s still wrong.
I got the real ID and a passport three years ago. I had all the necessary paperwork and it didn't cost me $600.00!
Sometimes getting the paperwork is expensive. A passport itself costs around $200, with all the fees. And that does not include costs of getting the documents.
I didn't vote for Trump. I live here, I'm married. What am I suppose to do if this shit becomes law? I do have a passport and a Real ID. What are you going to do? I live in a blue state, my senators and reps voted against this shit. What else do you want me to do? I feel your pain but...
I had all the documents, and yes, it does cost a lot. However, I travel a lot, so I must have a passport. I don't like these new laws, and I don't like how this country is run right now. But, I live here, and I do travel so...
If we were to have a "citizen ID", it should be inexpensive or free, simple to change in case of marriage or divorce,& not onerous to obtain or modify. Based on repub. history, the proposal is more likely than not to disenfranchise citizens.
um.... WHAT? This is outrageous
In Quebec, married women have kept their name since 1981 by law.
Really think it is time the DNC start helping voters get help. All the donations in the world won't mean a thing if there are no voters. Organize DNC. Get your voters legal.
Will the name of the doctor who brought me into this world help??
This should be the norm forever more!!
Have a passport, marriage license, and birth certificate ready, please don't pass this information to republican women they don't need to vote
What a regressive and archaic law! Both men and women need to fight this stupidity. Women’s rights are being trampled by this administration. One thing that shocks me is how many people in the US don’t have passports!! Y’all need to get out and see the world. Voter suppression!
On the passport comment - our country is massive. Going to another state for us is like going to another country in Europe. We don’t all need passports because we can get lots of satisfaction traveling in our own borders. And I do have a passport and have been to over 15+ other countries
I have a passport and still haven’t used it. Flights are expensive and long. It takes hours just to fly from one side of the country to the other. Most of us have no need to go to other countries. Europeans can be in another country in the time it takes us to drive to another city in the same state
Each to their own, I suppose. We absolutely love traveling. Canada is a huge country as well, with lots to see, but the world has so many amazing places to go. Traveling also opens your mind to appreciate other peoples culture, food, and diversity.
I am often surprised when I travel to the US, that I know more about America's geography than many Americans.
Definitely words of wisdom but... WHO THINKS YOUR BIRTH NAME IS YOUR MARRIED NAME??? THIS IS AN ADMINISTRATION OF EXTREME STUPIDITY!!!
They seek to reduce the # of women voters. Fight this with PREVENTION! 1) Don’t take your husband’s name if you marry; 2) If already married, start proceedings NOW to return to your birth name (use imposition of this new law as your formal justification for seeking the name change)!
That’s insane.
Our daughter didn’t change her name when she married. I’m so glad.
Primary primary primary. Men in the Democratic Party who vote against any kind of women’s rights should be gone the next election. Take note Mr. Blue Congressman….. you can’t win without women. We will take you out.
They cant win without making it harder, they are running out of BSing on convincing public on what the public wants done & their effort on paper on how long they really spent on what the public wants done they are afraid the public wants more reinsurance running for offices of time and efforts!
Interestingly Republicans just screwed themselves with the Safe Act! Female Democrats are less likely to take their husband’s surname 65% versus 90% consecutive, and they are 9% more likely to have passports. Still, the Senate must block this voter suppression bill.
AND Dem governors will adapt their processes much quicker. Not to mention, use quality control to ensure the new processes do not impact their next election 😁
Or her passport! 💙🔥
Barbaric custom.
I’ve already told my husband I’ll change my name back if they restrict my right to vote.
Extreme nonsense!
Why are you all putting up with this BS in your New Soviet Union. It's time to make a move.
Or change your government...
If you are wed, separate and return to your maiden name. Lots of women doing this will kill male egos. Their little truck nuts will creep up so high they will think they have a second set of tonsils.
This is so sad. I also saw what they are doing about people voting. So do that mean wherever the military is they cannot vote in their home state? Even though they are protecting all of us. Even though they are protecting the ones that are protecting his behind
She can use her passport?
Yes, if she has one. To get one costs upwards of $200, plus any fees to get any documents you may need. Which can range from little to hundreds of dollars.
If it's important to people they will obtain one, they last 10 years so it's great to have handy and to vote! 😊
When you have $40 for FOOD for the week for three people, you have rent that takes 3/4 of your income, and you have to keep the electricity on, where do you think you will come up with $200?
It pains me to see your answer, in the richest country of the world to see this is heartbreaking. I'm sorry 😞
There are MANY people living in this situation. I am not (yet. May be sometime in the next few months thanks to the serial rapist felon) in that situation. I realize how privileged I am. I know MANY people who are NOT.
Yes, I know 😞
And yet you were pretty dismissive in just telling them to use their passports. Most Americans do not have one and many can’t afford one.
Listen, I'm not dismissive I'm pro democracy and will do anything to vote, I know there are places with funds to help out, so there are options, we can't just say not one can afford it, we need all hands on deck and we have 3years to plan for it. That's all. Have a great day.
No. We don’t. There are elections happening THIS YEAR. And midterms (if they even happen) are next year. We do not have time to figure it out.
wow thats greatly has been said. women are having a lot of problems in many phases bcs of the name. passports, driving licenses and now as you say, voting.
@housedemocrats.bsky.social @democrats.org @democrats.senate.gov should call the SAVE Act the “GOP Disenfranchisement Act.” GOP women are more likely to follow name-change tradition, and less likely to have passports than their Democratic sisters. Result: fewer GOP voters
Better yet, don’t get married.
I may be missing something here, but isn’t it more common and traditional for Christian women to take their husband’s surname than in more liberal marriages? And if so, won’t this affect Republican wives (and hence half the Republican base) most?
More common? Probably. But not common enough to make up for the voting imbalance among women.
Ha! I just posted that. Yep, I agree.
That’s what I was going to say. They really didn’t think it through.
Plus these more traditional, one income households, might not be able to afford the $100 plus for added documentation requirements. Yea, didn’t think this through.
Already told my daughters this.
Thought I read birth certificate or marriage license along with am enhanced drivers license or passport will work.
Nope. And very few states have an enhanced drivers license, so that’s not available to most. A passport will work. Otherwise, you need a Real ID and a birth certificate in the same name.
No married women's birth certificate will ever match their Real ID. Those fuckers. Let's hope the Senate votes against the horrible bill.
Many women do not change their names. But, yep, 69 MILLION women will be affected. PLUS everyone who has had their names changed by court order.
Mine would. No one was ever required to take their husband's name!
I was gonna say! I even have my old SS card with my maiden name. But I had to go through this for my Real ID! Why is that obsolete now?
Real ID, as far as I know, isn't obsolete. I'm flying soon and was told we needed Real ID's to board plane. Republicans making it harder for women to vote, so they just make this shit up as they go along.
It is an issue long after I should have known it is an issue. It is bull shit.
There is now no reason whatsoever to change your last name to your husband’s last name. Women who marry are not property. Why would anyone give up their identity?
Hopefully it won’t pass the Senate. Apparently it requires 60 votes and without democrat support, that won’t happen. What a stupid bill. It definitely targets women and those who legally change their name. The numb nuts who thought of this one is nothing short of a hateful asshole.
In Québec 🇨🇦, it has been the law that women keep their birth names when they get married. www.quebec.ca/en/famille-e...
Never did 29 years ago. Glad I didn't And never will, now!
Don't marry and don't spawn, for sure. That alone could get you killed.
There is zero reason this bill should not be DOA in the Senate.
Except for the majority GOP? Why think it won't pass?
Filibuster
What next? Ban her from owning property? Having a Bank Account? Working? This is just plain immoral and wrong 😕
Literally yes. Read Project 2025
Or go hyphenated
They won't recognize the hyphenation. The point is not to make voting more secure, but to deny the right to as many people as possible.
Too late. Did that 55 years ago when the US was still a free country. Looks like I’ll be getting a passport to vote. Unless some Republican Senators vote with the Democrats and block it. Can’t depend on the SC to declare it unconstitutional.
A passport is more than just a travel accessory now.
Another day, another reason I’m glad I didn’t change my name
Then women who are disenfranchised from voting due to this law should be exempt from paying taxes. No taxation without representation
Handmaids Tale
Absolutely true now from this day forward. For those already married with a husband’s surname, change your name back to match your birth certificate!
Easier said than done - passport, social security, Medicare, plus all the normal piddling stuff.
It’s a hassle no matter which way you go, which always seems like it’s a feature not a bug when it comes to women’s issues
Don't marry?
I changed mine back to my maiden name when I divorced. I will never change it again.
You can choose your father’s last name or your husband’s last name…pick your patriarchy. (I chose the first one; both times!)
How is YOUR birth name “your father’s name,” HIS birth name is “HIS name?” And psst: not everyone has “their father’s name” at birth anyway.
Don’t hyphenate your name with your husbands either. But if you did, you both need to get your documents in order. Yes, LGBTQ as well.
Use it if you want, just don’t legally change it.
It’s my understanding a passport would be accepted to register to vote. Certified copies of my birth certificate and legal name change document is what I needed to get one.
So we ha e to re-register? Does a passport suffice?
Only if you move, if you’re already registered. Which is why everyone needs to register NOW. Immediately. For now. They’re discussing making everyone re-register. Yes, a passport works if you have one.
PSA: if you have the means women or anyone who has changed their name from birth, please apply for a passport!!! That will give you the option to vote with a birth certificate that has a different name. It still has to go through the Senate but we know how these things are going 🤬
I have a passport. But for others, will their birth certificate and marriage license work!?
act.aclu.org/a/save-act
I was so heartbroken that 4 Dems in the house voted for it
Reps GOLDEN, PEREZ, CASE, CUELLAR voted for SAVE Act. CASE and PEREZ also voted to censor Rep Al Green.
Traitors
No, that's the issue. It is completely draconian and disenfranchising anyone who has changed their name from birth. Women mostly, but many people change their name for other reasons too. How about JD Vance and Ted Cruz? That's 2 examples right there.
www.npr.org/2025/03/12/n...
act.aclu.org/a/save-act
It hasn’t passed the Senate right?
Correct. There's a great post by Bobby Logan that explains what we can do to fight this Check my page for it. (I'm having trouble linking).
Oops! Bobby Kogan
No. The bill doesn't allow for use of social security card or marriage license or anything else to explain the change in name.
That is ridiculous!
Yep. Welcome to project 2025.
Yes
I’ve just spent a good portion of day trying to get a certified copy of my marriage certificate! Been divorced for decades!!
Yes
No. The birth certificate has to match your ID.
They probably won’t renew our passports next.
40 years too late.
I didn't change my name and my kids have both. That was my choice though and many people make a different one. The problem right now is that many women DO have their husband's name. We need a system to help them get passports (expensive) or name changes (time consuming). Is there anything out there?
FFS 🤦 🇺🇸 take action y'all ☝️
Too late, and now I have to fight for my right to vote at the age of 68 years old. WTH are we doing!!!!
Amen
I’m hoping this doesn’t pass the senate. 🤞🏼
A whole lot of conservative women will not be able to vote —silver lining ..
I did wonder if it was cheaper and easier to get your name changed in the US than to get a passport.. given that passport processing staff will all now be laid off.
Imagine I have 38 yrs of marriage and the only reason I changed was because the taxes we were a military family and now I don’t know what to do.
The next bill the House passes will make it illegal for women NOT to take their husband’s name. Nothing for it now, sisters: we must marry each other.
And then they won’t renew our passports…they’re building a cage around us.
When the pendulum swings back, and it will, it is going to shear the head off the patriarchy once and for all.
Or just don’t take a husband.
🤗
So I’m divorced over 25 years yet kept my ex husbands last name for kids. What’s that mean for me???
You need to go change your name and it’s very expensive. They knows that
I can’t believed 4 democrats voted for this, if you want to call them and bombard their lines tell them thanks for nothing.
Your kids don't need you to have the same surname. I never did. You can change your name back or get a passport, I guess.
Besides, you can legally change your name either way and still call yourself whatever you wish on non-official legal documents. I never changed my surname but people always called me by my husband's surname anyway. I didn't care in most cases.
😂😂😂 but also 😳🥺
If true, I will start using my maiden name from now on.
To obtain a REAL ID driver’s license, in Indiana, I had to provide a certified birth certificate, official marriage certificate (from 40 yrs ago), an official divorce decree document, & a 2nd official marriage certificate. Now, to vote, if SAVE (the dictatorship) passes, it’s not enough?
Same here in Massachusetts. I have the new license and a passport
Similar here in PA. Just got mine last week. Brought my birth certificate, marriage certificate, passport, a utility bill, my license, my original Soc Sec card plus the Soc Sec with my married name. Oh, and $68. God help the person who tells me I cannot vote.
Nope.
Maybe everybody should just be stamped with a serial number at birth. Notarized at the same time, of course.
Better yet, don’t get married
Never did. Married twice.
Get a passport
Just another method the MAGAts use to suppress the vote. They know lower turnout favors them.
Guess I'll be paying the court to change my name back.
So we have to bring our birth certificates to vote?
Better yet don’t get married. It just makes no sense any longer.
Too late.
I am glad I have no birth certificate
How can that be good.
Do you think they’ll pass it in the senate? This insane.
Can’t you go to the social security office with your birth certificate and request a name change. Then get your new social security card and get a new drivers license with the name change.
You mean the SS office that has been closed? Or the one half way across the state and hope you can get that taken care of in one visit? I’d prefer to see this bill die and never be brought up again.
I don’t think the Senate will pass it, but I didn’t think Trump would win so there’s that. 🤷🏻♀️
We’re definitely living in a twilight zone alternate reality. Who’d have guessed that 75M voters preferred authoritarianism and autocracy?
They’re not closed. At least not the ones in Illinois. They have reduced staff but some are coming back. I know a few people who work at social security offices here in Illinois.
It doesn’t mean others are not closing, because they will be. Completely shut down, or “relocated” to other Federal facilities that may not be as convenient for everyone to get to, especially those with mobility issues. Not all public transit is efficient. apnews.com/article/soci...
I know. I had breakfast with my friend who works at the SS office. She said they’ve cut her staff in half. She said they heard some are coming back now. But she said who knows. She has to send Elon an email every week of the 5 things she accomplished. My BIL is a federal worker as well. Same BS!
Sure you can. What does this have to do with this law?
Except for the new drivers license.
Social Security cards are now issued at birth. I certain had once since early childhood in the 1960s. It has always had my birth name. Do they ever change them???
The social security office doesn't have anything to do with birth certificates.
The only thing the ss office handles is the ss cars, that's it, this has nothing to do with having to prove your name changes
I don’t know. I just know that if someone who works for me requests a name change they have to get a drivers license and bring in a new social security card with their new name. Not sure how the process works, but if you’re going to change your name, it also has to be on your social security card.
I've been trying to get my big birth certificate since January, it's a nightmare if your name has changed at any time. My parents were not married but gave me his last name at age 4 so I have no way of tracking that name change down. I went to the ss office to get a print out but they wouldn't give
Believe it or not 55 years ago when I got married, my mother said the first thing I needed to do was go to the Social Security office and get my Social Security number changed over to my name.
Punishing those who followed traditional name changes when seeking to return to 18th or 19th century ...
And don't vote anything but Democratic.
My wife never wanted to change her name. I didn’t care then and don’t care now. We are still married. As I sure as hell don’t “own”her.
But make sure your name is on everything you purchase together.

New voting bill — a solution in search of a problem given how rare noncitizen voting is.
...or don't get married
He did say this will be the last time you have to vote.
Most of my sisters are very angry.
Got a passport as my Christmas present to myself. Thought I might need it to head north. Now I'll use it to vote. Married 42 years, have had this name longer than I had my maiden name.
Or don’t get married
A little late for most of us! 🤦♀️
And this is why I hyped my name..
This would apply to JD Vance. He goes by a different name than his birth name.
You just know there will be a work around for men in the final bill. 🤬
So does Ted Cruz
Go to the Social Security office, take your old SS card, your ID, your birth certificate, have them issue you a new SS card with your MARRIED name on it, but keep your original with your maiden name, (in case of divorce). SS card is a document vetted from a FEDERAL AGENCY! FUCK maga!
Primary primary primary. Men in the Democratic Party who vote against any kind of women’s rights should be gone the next election. Take note Mr. Blue Congressman….. you can’t win without women. We will take you out.
A'HO and Amen to that Sister ✊👊✌️🙏💙
Which means literally zero under this law.
And Identification card and a social security card with matching names are distributed by Federal Agencies. They'll have millions MORE lawsuits if they don't honor identification VETTED by their own agencies.
Again, those mean ZERO under this law. They are not DPOC and are irrelevant.
What's DPOC?
Documented Proof of Citizenship.
I got married at 37. I told everyone I wasn't going through the hassle of changing things for a name I knew I wouldn't remember to answer to. Seems like an even greater idea now.
Also also... It's not just names not matching that may result in being exempted from voting. Good bet gender markers will see refusals as well. Not just for trans people, but for any woman deemed "not appearing to match society's standards for feminine" So a bit of a racism as well 🤬
Just need to look at the cis women in sports attacked by "transvestigators" like JK Rowling and her ilk
And if you have already changed your name to his, it's time to reverse that decision (if you value your vote) 😶
Better yet Ms. Farrow don’t get married
This. 👏
100% I’ll take it a step further and advocate for not getting married, period. But, if you do, do not take his last name!
The irony being, this will effect more married conservative women.
Time to rise up women
Removing the right of a woman to choose Removing the right to vote What next? Arranged Marriage No right to divorce No right to work
From the party of hypocrisy. So much for traditional marriage
Okay, what if you are already registered or vote by mail? Is this just for future voting registrations? It is a slap in the face to American women! And the four Democrats who voted yes, shame on you!
I believe it's a requirement when you go to vote...so...birth certificate or (I think) passport. 🤔 As for vote by mail...good question...I suspect that's next on the DOGEbags agenda to remove. Sigh
Different rules in different States. Look into it ASAP.
It requires physical proof of citizenship, in person, to register or update registration. Driver's license & Real IDs don't count. Passport/birth certificate do. If you're married and took spouse's last name with no passport and you move into a new district, you may not be able to update, i.e. vote
Thanks.
Yes, so make sure to always have our Birth certificate. And remember passports expire..
Your both certificate will have your birth name on it, and the bill doesn't say that marriage certificates or proof of name change will be accepted. I suppose it might be, but it's not guaranteed. Good reminder on passports
From my (granted, limited) understanding, no supporting documents accepted. Your details must match the accepted ID So at the very least, everyone needs to double check their ID is accurate.
*Y😅
Dear Sisters, don’t get married
So can Melania and Ivanka vote?
If she's already registered she can. But if she gets married and takes her husband’s name, she’ll be forced to prove her citizenship to re-register.
Dear sisters start using your maiden name.
#dirtnap time
Permanently.
Too late for alot of us.
The 4 stupid Dems that agreed to this problem of making it harder for citizens to vote with no finding ever of this being a significant problem, It is all one sided GOP don't want more votes.
Don’t elect tyrants! I proudly took my husband’s name because he is a great guy. The only name that needs to go is Trump!
Ummm.... he is already elected and there may never be another election. I proudly kept my surname because it is mine since birth. Hope you can vote!
www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c... Read carefully
Sisters, do whatever the f@&k you want. STOP THE VOTER SUPPRESSION LAW.
I didn’t
I never thought it would be “Republican sexism,” — as the eventual reason I’m glad I never changed my name.
Who carries around their birth certificates anyway? Who has a passport?! I do, because of work, but half the folks I know have never left the country. This is crap.
In the Netherlands a woman can take her husband’s last name (or he hers, fyi), but that does not change her (or his) name in a legal sense. You can use your spouse’s name, but legally you will always only ever have the last name you got at birth.
This is horrible for all married women with name changes. I’m glad I never married. Having my birth last name all my life, I’ve always thought it was a stupid ritual to take on the man’s name when marrying.
It’s not just married women it divorced women who didn’t change their name back from their husbands.
So this isn’t just for new registrations - bad enough- but now every married woman who took her husband’s name had to register?? This is insane
If only I had known. Fortunately my passport is in my legal name.
😲
Early '80s, my new boss (fundamentalist Christian) was outraged that I kept my maiden name as middle name. Said it was disrespectful to my late hubby.🙄 Told him my hubby (VERY good guy) would, ummm, loudly disagree.
I’m divorced but I’ve used a hyphenated name since I was married. All of my official documents are still in both names. My voter registration lists both names. I wonder what happens in this case? I don’t have a passport yet but will soon.
It won't pass the Senate.
How do you know this? I don’t trust any Republican.
Because it will need 60 votes to pass in the Senate and there are enough Dems to kill it.
I really hope that will happen. A lot if women will be impacted.
www.congress.gov/bill/119th-c...
I kept my last name
I don't think that this was very well thought out. Would a woman who votes for more liberal thinking people be less likely to take her spouses name than a conservative woman? Which voters are more likely to have a passport? This will be challenged in court all over the country eventually. So stupid!

Got married 30 years ago & kept my last name. It’s the name I was born with & the name I’ll die with!
🤚
Same!
Same!
Same here
me too!
Well it’s not allowed in Québec anymore , been a decade at least. Cheaper for the gouvernement administration , and isn’t it backwards to take your husband’s name ?
Oups government … my French autocorrect 🥲
Have your name changed back to your birth name.
Okay then.. so all married women who took their husbands' last names (by convention) should no longer consider those surnames valid and revert to their 'maiden'/ original surnames.
Except that costs a lot of money and takes quite a bit of time.
Amen!
ILLEGAL AND UNJUST.
make him take urs 🤷🏽♀️
My wife never took my last name...that would have felt weird to me anyways.
Mia, this is so messed up!
Why should women change their names when they get married? Heck, why even get married? It’s a centuries-old system built to control women and transfer ownership, sorry, partnership. Keep your name, your freedom, your career, your vote, and your power.
I'd say get a divorce while it's still legal too. They are coming for no fault divorce. You can always just live together afterwards.
Unless Chuckie takes the knee again to the chief Nazi, this bill dies in the Senate. It needs 60 votes to go the floor for up or down vote. House did this as performative showmanship. SLAVE act (Stop Legal American Voters Everywhere) would restore electorate of 1860: white men of power only.
And if you want to go back to your maiden name... www.forbes.com/advisor/lega...
Getting to a point where we will have to have their "papers" at all times. It's kind of like every totalitarian government.
CHANGE YOUR NAME BACK!!
Not to mention couples who combine their names. The traitors running the government should be dealt with...severely.
I was told I needed a marriage certificate showing why name had changed. I have a passport with my married name!
What if your 1953 marriage certificate showing name change only lists maiden name? This is where we are at trying to get my 94yr old mother her Real id. They won’t accept it because it doesn’t list her name as her husband’s. I mean is she going to have to go to court to change her name? 🤬😤😩
What if you already have?
Basically, get a passport. 🤷🏻♀️
Well, I have a passport and have for most of my life. Not to be taken literally, right? I’m too old to expatriate. Since my maiden name is my middle name — that’s how I changed my name after two years of marriage, I’m probably safe. Women with hyphenated last names, too. This is crazy!
For some of us, it is too late! Luckily I am a passport holder, but many aren't. Thing that will hurt them is they are more likely to vote Republican.
