Yes. It's a brilliant painting but also absolutely horrific.

Her absolute purity contrasted with the horror of what is about to happen to her is stark to say the least. I can understand why it might be a favourite painting for those drawn to the macabre.

I have an absolute horror of execution to start with. I do find there's something strangely sanitised about the scene - the exquisite light and vibrant colour. The thought of what the scene will look like a few moments later makes my blood run cold.
