A U.S. family with a trans and a nonbinary child just got preliminary asylum in Canada. Asylum. From here. The “land of the free”. That’s how broken this country is. We used to take in the persecuted, now we are the threat people are fleeing. And the world knows it.
Here's the thing. America calling themselves the "Land of the Free" is a lot like North Korea calling itself "Democratic People's Republic of Korea". It's the same with being a "Good Christian". If you have to keep saying it to others, it's probably because it's not all that obvious.
Thank God. Yes, it's hard to fathom how we got here, but we've passed the Rubicon. Those who can get out should, while they still can.

As a parent of a trans daughter and a non-binary child - we are doing everything we can to get out of here. Even if my spouse and I can’t go, I will sure as hell ensure that my daughter and her wife can emigrate. I am so grateful for Canada‘s expansion of their asylum program. ❤️
Is asylum in Canada for trans a new thing? I was told there’s an agreement between the countries which prohibits asylum seekers from the others’ country (US or Canada).

Actually no country, including Canada, has declared the US unsafe yet. Perhaps by the time this lady’s family gets their final decision, it could be.
Actually they have made exceptions for trans and lgbtq. Some instances for domestic violence victims as well.
My understanding is not one American has ever been granted asylum in Europe whereas millions of us immigrate here through existing visa programs.
It’s a huge risk to take to apply for asylum when there are countries and visas that are available with certainty. I cannot find any evidence that people from a safe country - a legal designation- have been granted asylum. I’m not saying it’s never happened but I don’t see how it can. Also…
In 5 years of being in The Netherlands they can apply for permanent residency or even an EU passport. Asylum status would just be starting then and presumably the path to citizenship would be very long and uncertain. Asylum really is a last resort. Americans have lots of options.

I’m catching up on her story but it sounds like they will live in limbo for 4 years until their case is heard. They would have been welcomed in the Netherlands under the DAFT visa and in just 5 years they could apply for EU passports. They could work and they would have healthcare
