wait, fuck, guys I'm 5'5? have spent the past dozen years or so telling people I was 5'4 because I think I just....guessed? at some point? but I've now googled it for the first time turns out when people said "wow you seem tall for 5'4" the answer wasn't "yeah I gesticulate a lot, like a peacock"

Average height of UK women is 5'3" or 5'4" depending on sources, but if you are shopping for clothes it's apparently 5'10". GAP trousers are particularly hilarious IIRC.

My theory is that American companies work on the average for Europe so it all gets thrown out by Scandinavians and the Dutch. But luckily Levis now sell 'cropped' 501s, so you can buy them as normal jeans and not need to turn them up.

At 5’6” I’m taller, comparatively to other women, than my 5’11” boyfriend is to other men, which is quite odd because I don’t often feel tall and he is generally perceived as reasonably tall. I assume because a lot of women still wear heels, maybe?

jun 23, 2025, 9:40 pm • 6 0 • view
avatar
Marie Le Conte @youngvulgarian.marieleconte.com

yeah do you always wear flats? bc I don't even wear Heels heels but would say I spend the vast majority of my life in 1 to 2 inch heels, so obv in that context you wouldn't actually be taller than me....ever

jun 23, 2025, 9:41 pm • 3 0 • view
avatar
Charlotte Lydia Riley @lottelydia.bsky.social

Pretty much now! I mean some of my flats are reasonably chunky but yeah. At some point I might crack out my 2-3ish heeled ankle boots again just to assert my actually tall identity.

So relatable. When I moved to Germany two older ladies in a supermarket queue remarked how tall I was & asked me my height. I mumbled that I didn't know ('cause metric) but they looked at me like I was an idiot so I panic-guessed an approximate number of cms. That then became my European Height
