absolute peak of that was a few years ago when I was sleeping REALLY badly so got some sleeping pills then I ended up getting so anxious about the sleeping pills making my heart stop in my sleep (??) that'd I'd just lie there, wide awake, panicking the human brain! a flawless machine!

Yeah, I wake up in the night, get so stressed that I won't get back to sleep and be ruined the next day that I can't sleep, don't get any rest, and am ruined the next day. And so to bed. Work in the morning. Genuinely hope you get enough sleep.

Yeah, in my experience once you've had really bad insomnia for a while, if you've been lying in bed in the night for hours trying to fall asleep, your mind starts to monitor your bodily functions realllly closely and any slight heart palpitation can create a panic doom spiral.

Assume you’ll have tried it already, but magnesium can really help - and doesn’t feel weird like having a pill that puts you to sleep.

Oh yes. It was almost like my brain was afraid of being dormant, screaming "don't turn me off", like a self-aware computer in a dystopian SF movie. Industrial strength antihistamines muted it, but they won't work for everyone.

Run or circuit training, then a big glass of wine.

The human brain is a flawless machine that 1) can wind you up like that but then, some time later can 2) be amused by its own ridiculousness.
