While the body owed much to the 19-year-old Range Rover, it tried to look as different as possible, with stepped roof and alpine windows. Like the early RR it was marketed as an all-purpose vehicle, suitable for challenging off-road activities but smart for family and business use.
The Discovery's clever interior, seating up to seven, was the work of the Conran Design Group and pioneered many 'lifestyle' features. Existing Austin Rover components were extensively used to keep costs down. All these early models were the same Sonar Blue shade inside, regardless of body colour.
Dad had an early 5 door. We absolutely loved it and I found excuses to drive it/steal it as often as possible. Just like his Golf GTi 16v, Merc 190E and Cavalier GSI 4x4. Once took his 190E to Cornwall for a week without being clear how long I'd be gone 😂 This profile is about memories isn't it?
Sure is. The 5-door looked the part too, far better balanced. You certainly had a good start in life.
I still lust after an early 3dr V8 manual… but I suspect they’re all gone (or bobtailed)
