Dementia is an insidious disease that affects everyone in different ways. Yes, my father was able to walk around but was not a golfer. I hope no one in your family is ever afflicted with it.

I was asking a genuine question. You did say near the end. When my mother was near the end she was in a bed and had been for months. So I was asking if he was walking around and unable to speak near the end.
