Your choice of people to follow must be very, very unusual. For me it is still very much nothing like Twitter, in a good way.

I mean OFC it’s not like Twitter. Twitter is in a different category of worse. I don’t remember when I opened it last time. Here, I see 70-90% of US politics in both “Following”, “Popular with Friends” and “Discover” section.
If you had a job in US academia, what is happening in US politics would be of critical importance to you now. It is difficult to discuss science if everything you need to do your research has either been taken away or might be taken away any day.
OFC it’s important for those discussing it. But say you were invited to a daily meeting about distal regulation, then 45/60 min of every meeting was spent on US politics. It’s not helpful to see 45 minutes per day of US politics unless you can do something about it (ei it feeds into your decisions).
This has never meant to be solely or predominantly a science forum. People post whatever is most pressing or interesting for them in the circumstances they are. The fact that what is most pressing for them now is not the what you are interested in doesn’t mean that they are using the platform wrong.
I also lived in Ukraine incl during 2013-2015. It’s not productive to see 90% about the current political events - it increases stress levels with only reduction in the ability to solve problems that are in your power to solve. It should be an option to train algorithms to show a more balanced %.
Posting what you think about political issues on these public platforms is not a good idea. Too much risk. Maybe it’s fine for some people but not for everyone. So you see 10-20% of science and can only say extremely general things about politics. Not very productive use of time 🕰️.
What is probably not a good idea is telling your colleagues what to do and how to use their time.
It’s not like I am deleting the account or advocate for it. I will try to respond and post new papers from me and colleagues - but it’s harder to see relevant things in that sea of important but not relevant. It’s hard to justify spending time here. It’s a bit sad but papers won’t write themselves.
