Pretty much -- Tom Swift was the 'Appleton' series that holds pride of place in that regard, though the emphasis is more on inventions; there's a _Young Indiana Jones_ episode where he's seen reading a Swift book and even dates a (fictional) daughter of the whole shebang's founder, namely this guy.
