“Historically, when left to their own devices, states don’t necessarily do the right thing for kids with disabilities and their families,” a former director at the federal Office of Special Education Programs said. With @idahostatesman.com (Published May)

Even when states are required by law to do the right thing for kids with disabilities and their families, they STILL don’t do the right thing and fight families every step of the way. Wake up to our reality!

He told his nephew, Fred III, to let his disabled son die, then move to Florida and rejoin the family. He also retaliated against Fred III when that son was a baby by kicking them off the family life insurance policy.

Even well-intentioned states can't put enough pressure on local school districts to give student's with disabilities the help they need to become emotionally healthy, independant adults.

No, they do not. People forget that the solution for kids with disabilities before we had a social safety net and programs to help these families, they'd stick the kids in homes never to be heard from again.

Sadly they still do. They never stopped. They call that the #TroubledTeenIndustry. They just disguise it as rehabs, boarding schools, and other places where parents and the state stash unwanted children. Many assume behavioral issues and character flaws are the problem when it's often #mentalhealth.

Truth. We (parents/guardians) have to fight for everything for our kids. And it’s because the dept of education gives us that right.

Some states will not provide a free & appropriate education. FAPE is gone. Our kids with special needs, our neurodiverse students will be shuttered away. I am cry. I am a special Ed teacher. All children deserve an education.
