The process of getting long-term aid after a natural disaster is wildly unpredictable. Congress takes anywhere from a few weeks to more than a year to approve the money. Actually distributing the funds to communities can take even longer: propub.li/4lrL9uV

Screenshot of article excerpt. Text: How Long They Waited. The amount of time between a disaster declaration and the appropriation of long-term relief dollars varies wildly. Here is a sampling of those time frames: -Hurricane Harvey (2017): 15 days -Hurricane Ida (2021): 32 days -Hurricane Sandy (2012): 93 days -Houston ice storm (2021): 223 days -Hurricane Sally (2020): 375 days -Hurricane Laura (2020): 398 days -California wildfires (2020: 404 days

If you take more than a year to get aid for a disaster, aren’t you actually just providing exceedingly fast aid for next year’s disaster? I joke, but no. The system itself is a disaster. It’s broken. Someone (or many people) should be fired. Politicians should be running on this issue

ProPublica’s silence on Hurricane Maria and Puerto Rico in 2017 speaks volumes. It’s as if Puerto Ricans don’t count as Americans in their newsroom. That’s not just disgraceful—it’s revealing.

Yeah, usually it has a lot to do with if your victims are in a red state that isn’t fucking Texas or NC. If you’re in a blue state, Nazis like MTG take aid hostage for policy concessions. Which should get them “perforated” for treason

This reminds me of the old New Yorker cartoon, where a guy is on the phone with his calendar open, and he says “How about never? Does never work for you?” That is what it will be this time around.

I would also note that at this point many legitimate are simply being denied, which means the need will not be addressed, AND that the wait time will never be recorded.

Just looking at the dates related to the time, on a superficial level, it might appear that how long it takes depends on who is is office, and how motivated they are to attend to the needs of your community.
