This happened in (predominantly Black) Altadena during the Fires in LA in January too. Warnings came 7 hours late, after most homes were already destroyed. An alert local is the reason so many got out in time. As always, we keep us safe.

They're also on video a year prior to the incident stating that they didn't want the alert system because it was just for tourists and residents would be annoyed by the noise. Guess the result here is less annoying to them.
I'm sure part of the reason is that the alert systems can't target the right area with any kind of precision, thus to consumers too many false alarms. same with tornado warnings,
As someone who lives in a hurricane area, I’d much rather get a false positive than nothing at all. It’s easier to put patio furniture back out than to replace it after the wind blows it away.
A whole different category is a hurricane. I'm taling floods or tornados which are more pin point. I gave up any tornado warning systems bc it would alert me even if the tornado was 150 miles from my home or a threat to one.
Oof, true. I’m trying to think of anything that could get warnings out to only those people in danger, but there’s always some massive flaw or other.
