Is it too hardcore? People seem to prefer softcore fairytale p0rn (hence... fourth wing dragon saga's)?

That could be it. It is pretty hardcore sci-fi, not an easy level of reading. But idk. I thought the void trilogy from him was much more intense, also great

I read the books leading up to it (i think?), Judas Unchained and Pandora's Star, but not the Void trilogy itself. Worth it?

I think so yes. Faster than those previous two, and lots of characters transfer. Probably his "weirdest" series.

Nope! They're not THAT connected, just a few overlapping characters that don't require much backstory. It does a great job introducing them.
