Del Monte Foods, the nearly 140-year-old company whose canned fruits and vegetables have long been grocery store staples, has filed for bankruptcy as it grapples with mounting debt, post-pandemic headwinds and shifts in consumer spending.
We’re in big trouble if Delmont filed bankruptcy, who’s net and not the album
...what?
@washingtonpost.com Why aren't you covering the American Gestapo and Trump's private Army? Why aren't you covering Trump's war on America?
The Man from Delmonte. He say... "oh FFS!" youtu.be/F9IxMtVnhR8?...
Could fear mongering from “nutrition experts” on social media have anything to do with this?
And they will have plenty of company
Since the 80s we have been seeing every product & service come down to only one or two corporations in every segment eliminating all or having only one competition. This is not free enterprise capitalistic America as Republicans have sold us. Today's Republicans are still promoting trickle down
Oh no! My favorite brand
It’s very unfortunate for us who love their brand. Wish, the government can help the company out of bankruptcy
Their canned fruit was never actually "fruit" It's just sugar disguised as fruit..Don't buy that crap...
Expensive and their quality waned, along with shrinkflation all "brand names" should go under, they're all pretty much owned by one or two people. Terrorist conglomeration in the media turned it to shit also.
This can't be good.
Del Monte is a huge employer in the Central Valley. Del Monte closing shop would be a huge hit to already deeply disadvantaged communities.
I like canned manderin oranges. I buy Dole. I bought Del Monte by mistake recently, and they are significantly worse. Skins still on oranges, seeds, and a bitter taste. Better product might help.
Del Monte is a name people trust and depend on
Karma takes time
As with many of these American transnationals, Chiquita is another, Del Monte has some dark episodes to answer for. Here is one. www.thebureauinvestigates.com/stories/2024...
Just the beginning of consumers moving totally into the generic market. Sit back and watch brand name companies falter and fall. They think they are being smart killing the middle class but will regret it.
I would say their problem was the high prices they charged.
Just say corporate raiders, guys
The man from Delmonte… says no! Or that a UK only meme?
I'm sorry to hear of any company going bankrupt. Del Monte used to be the best available canned fruit brand in the UK many years ago, not so any more the quality disappeared, not sure when, but like most products the quality is strangled out of them for profit.
Nobody wants canned green beans anymore.
I'm poor and disabled. I do. Frozen isn't bad either but it's more expensive and constantly sold out in my area stores.
Trump’s America.
And 80% of its workers are headed to Alligator World.
I grew up eating canned everything, especially veggies, as they were cheap, easy to store, and cook. Now I buy almost NO canned foods at all except tomatoes. I can see where this is a problem. Frozen is just so much better and stores well.
Not sorry to see them disappear. At all.
How long until 🍊🍆🥔 starts hollering about losing an iconic US brand?
Always a reliable product. So disturbing. Were they not managed well?
How often do you prepare canned vegetables
Affordable, long-lasting in storage, crucial for food banks providing very low income communities. Maybe take a second and think about who might need to rely on canned vegetables as a calorie/nutrient source. Think about the unhoused, folks living in cars and RVs, etc.
Why are you speaking to me in that condescending tone? Someone wants to know how a company that sells canned food is struggling. I asked them a question to demonstrate changing consumer habits were a major contributor.
lol ok
Seldom.
Exactly. Consumer habits have changed, people buy much less canned food than they used to.
All of the time.
😢
Wonder how much "store"brands sold by the Big 3 grocery chains contributed to this. I have a few favored brands of processed foods based on quality, quantity, flavor and price, and find it increasingly that they are replaced by store brands, cheaper but not as good. I'll miss Del Monte products.
You know big companies package store brands right? It is cheaper because it doesn't carry the name brand.
So taking our tax dollars to cover their mistakes and laziness while they stay rich.
No sympathy for this corporate entity. They exploited Central & South America relentlessly
Did tariffs on aluminum have anything to do with it?
Forty odd years ago I worked a construction site adjacent to a Del Monte cannery in Emeryville, Ca. It was interesting to observe that at lunch break DM workers made a bee-line to a corner liquor store and drank their lunch in a nearby vacant lot
My dad worked for this great company his entire working life. Sad day.
NutriAsia owned www.straitstimes.com/business/com...
How much was their CEO paid? Fuck them www.reuters.com/article/busi....
MAGA works
WOW!... This is a real shocker!...140-year old Del Monte Foods filing for Bankruptcy is beyond my comprehension! 🥴
Tariffs on steel and aluminum mentioned.🤔
There will be TARIFFS Here!; TARIFFS There! -- With these No Good Stupid ASS Fascists sitting in OUR White House, there will be TARIFFS "Everywhere!"...
Or not. It depends on the day and if trump likes you.😡
Who would guess no one to pick pineapples would cause that.
I buy Del Monte. Guess I won’t anymore 🤷♀️
Meaning they didn't understand the market they serve.
Chapter 11 is a way for corporations to significantly reduce their debt and still maintain their operations. They will be fine. They are simply taking advantage of forgiving corporate policy. Those policies don't exist for general citizens. We file bankruptcy, and we lose our homes and wealth.
Sigh 😔
Are we great yet ???! They no longer have field workers.
😮😮😮
Never in the life of Del Monte! These are real companies that have served the American People through many decades of winter’s cold. So, don’t nobody see the catastrophic effects this Trump regime has inflicted on America in almost 200 days?
Hey Wapo, remember how you couldn't decide between the two Presidential candidates to endorse? We just think you're feckless now.
Private Equity kills.
Go frump. Making America great
So the man from del monte said NO
Yay such a crooked company deserves to fall
Weird. I wonder why.
I was going to ask if a private equity firm was the reason.
Don't worry, I'm sure the private equity investors are doing just great!
They already took out all they paid for it back in 2011 and some. They loaded the company with debt and massive interest payments. The company still owes that debt and suppliers. KKR (Owner) no longer have to pay those debts and will own or sell DelMonte assets as soon as they emerge from chapter 11
Always fatal when the beancounters take over a company. Some financier was once said to be able to look at a balance sheet and tell you everything about a company. Now, anyone can look at a company's web page and tell you it's headed down the toilet. Just look for "partners", "portfolio", etc...
Thanks. I was , for a split second, real concerned for the private equity.
Please, could stop pulling out DEI out your butts?
Even before reading the comments, I thought “sounds like a private-equity gutting.”
Great, now regular people have a shot of canning and selling their own fruit and vegetables to their local and other markets for a cheaper price that are loyal to entrepenur capitalism rather than corporate mercentilism.
Wow
WTF?
Say goodbye to a company that produced prison-quality canned food. No one ruined more perfectly good fruits and vegetables as Del Monte.
Doesn't make sense. Plenty of people I know are stocking up canned food in case supermarket shelves go empty. This sounds like somebody needs their golden parachute and this is a convenient way to shaft employees.
And no one to work in their factories for $5 per day🧌
Remember Polly Peck! Del Monte has a chequered history!
The man from Del Monte, he say ‘oh, fuck’.
Great work, Trump. Maybe you can get rid of all American businesses
Another WIN for #Felon47 and #MAGA.
The man from Del Monte says “Nooooooooo!”
I took this picture at a Walmart the other day. It’s the entire canned fruit section. I was shocked.
I think this is just the beginning, more shock awaits us in every sector of the Country. unless Trump come up with good policies that will be acceptable by our manufacturers down to the retailers and consumers. After all his MAGA supporters still believe his right about everything
I’m unfamiliar with their history as an enterprise but the timeline allows for banana republic oppression & slavery. However, I’m so willing to be corrected!
In this rapidly falling trump economy, America is filing for bankruptcy. Where’s all that winning we were promised? My bad, winning is only for billionaires.
😔😔💔
Chemicals and processed sugar. Who’d buy this.
The man from Del Monte says 'l quit !'
you beat me to it Jus !!
🤪
I wonder if they're a target of a leveraged buyout - those excel at creating"mounting debt"
Sheeee-it!!
Sorry to hear this news. DelMonte had been a trusted brand for generations.
Shifts to nasty. Buy up Del Monte now.
#MAGA #FAFO
😳
What will happen to the Man fro Del Monte
Doesn't matter. They wouldn't have the laborers to pick the fruit and vegetables. This used to be called the 'Peter Principle,' that everybody Rises to their level of incompetency. Now the Trump presidency has caused corporations to reach the levels of diminishing returns.
😭
They could regain a lot of popukarity by taking the PBAs out of their can linings & advertising it. Health first sort of initiative.
Don't they already do this?
Ifthey do, i haven't heard of it. There was some talk of switching to PBFs, but the difference between the two chemicals is negligable. They are both estrogen mimics and they will both cause people to put on weight. I avoid canned good wherever I can.
Wow...
Aluminum tariffs
I have worked for KKR in a hotel that was owned by them and was managed by a company called KSL, which all the employees said meant Keep Slavery Legal. They are cheap bastards that only care about wealth and power. I feel sorry for Del Monte. Who doesn’t remember eating vegetables from them? Sad! 😔
I have no sympathy for corps due to not being able to sell their over priced products. Myself? I’ve started using sure or generic brands
Store (Bluesky needs an edit button!)
Overpriced to the point they lost their consumer base.
Literally what this comes down to. Pricing themselves like they're a luxury product
Their stuff is from the US, whereas store brands are from China. "Distributed by" a US city means the contents are from China.
With Donald Trump, food is a luxury. Remember when countries voted if Food is a right, only the U.S. and Israel voted it wasn't. So they get to starve their own and Palestinians.
how did the vote go on clean air and water?
Keep us alive when I was a kid…😢 MAGA DOESNT CARE! ☹️
Del Monte cans imperfect produce farmers can't sell to national chains and labels them as USDA Commidities for CSFP (Comodity Supplemental Food Programs) for needy Americans. #Trump, #Musk and #DOGE decimated that program.
Del monte declared bankrupcy
Yes, you should see I referenced that article and attached it to my original post on this topic.
Do not forget #TrumpTax.
The #FarmBill has been a mainstay for both American farmers and the needy. SHAME ON #GOP #TRUMP #MUSK! cc @chrismurphyct.bsky.social @slotkin.senate.gov
Good to know of the direct link. My aunt does commodity disbursement in our county. I wonder if she is even aware of this. Thx for your post.
Post and Quaker Cereals also provide USDA branded cereal and oatmeal for that program.
Tell her to Google "Farm Bill 2025 cuts" there are lots of articles. If she administers a program, she is already aware. Notices have gone out.
Will do. Thank you!✌🏾
Nothing to do with tariffs on steel and aluminium then?
Another victim of the trash fire that is private equity, who ruin everything.
That’s sad! Although I don’t buy Delmonte, I feel sad that they won’t be on the shelf anymore!💙💙💙
That's sad.
I'm sorry to see this. Del Monte Foods has always been a part of my life.
So much for all those MAGA "preppers" out there, assuming they can ride all of this out by stocking up on canned goods.
They are my favorite go to!
More companies will fold. "Thanks" tRump.
Fuck Del Monte, if it weren't for Chiquita the phrase would be Pineapple Republic
While Del Monte says increased production costs are to blame, some experts say that canned foods, which rely heavily on preservatives, are no longer America’s go-to at the grocery store. “Consumer preferences have shifted away from preservative-laden canned food in favor of healthier alternatives”
Private equity killed this company
🎯🤣... 🏆 The quiet part said aloud. Cashing out.
😳 Unreal
They should go from cams to glass.
Much heavier to ship, and too fragile
Shifts in consumer spending? Now that the US is well underway to becoming an authoritarian dictatorship and the crops are rotting in the fields, aren't people stocking up on canned food?
Probably hurts when there is nobody to pick your product.
All they need to do reduce the salt, sugar and hfcs by 90% and that will save them money from day one. 🤷♀️ People are making better health choices and it doesn't include 2-days worth of sodium or 1/4 of sugar/hfcs per can. 🤷♀️
The man from Demonte, he say "no!".
Del Monte the company that persuaded President Eisenhower to turn his back on Cuba’s requests for help? If it wasn’t for their interference in politics the Cuban missile crisis would never have happened and Cuba would have come under the American instead of the Russian sphere of influence.
Oh what a different world it could have been.
Who needs to eat.
This is heartbreaking
I think it's more to do with abuse, torture and human exploitation that their products have been de-shelved by major supermarkets. The compensation claims from their Kenya Thika farm would amount to millions being paid out. Better they went quietly.... www.theguardian.com/world/2024/m...
Should we even mention Hawaii?
Might as well!
These are the type of things that people were buying. They were just bad with their money, then two fucking bad.
The bad side of this story is, once competition is eliminated from a category, prices tend to rise more than the typical annual inflation rate. Bad for anyone who buys canned goods.
Del Monte was Bane'd
Another private equity raid in action. Fuck MBAs
I have an MBA. Private equity deserves to burn in business hell.
Thanks for being one of the few good ones
youtu.be/auMuZ_oiH_E Still don't think he's in cognitive decline?
Sounds like poor Management
Not that popular apparently
Sorry to hear this
That's another OMG! 😮
Whoa - surprise. Won't matter in the end b/c we won't have any vegetables to can. The workers will all be in concentration camps. On their way to god knows where. The govt spending billions to do all this. No food, no workers, no money left. Great.
We're sounding more like North Korea. TFG loved his people applauding him and starving to death and dying from sickness. No money no freedom.
Its one reason they're ramping up the concentration camps and legalizing child labor. Keep us starving, they think, and they'll never have to pay for labor.
Trump did say on a hot microphone. He wanted " HIS " people to jump when told to just like Kim Jong Un .
All part of Cheetolini’s make America great again campaign😂
Maybe too soon, bcuz when we run out of fresh produce the canned stuff will be all we have. It lasts forever.
Hey Donald Trump, are we great now?
I'm not going to be one of those crying for this company. People in the US have no idea how much these conglomerates destroy lives in poor country. Cameroon as an example, saw its local farmers lose everything as the thieving gov't granted their lands to Del Monte for cheap bananas to Europe.
Smar thing with Hudson’s Bay Company in Canada, bought out by equity firm, bankrupt and gone in June.
Been around since 1670
OMG, it's gone? I worked there as a teenager.
Yep. 350 years in business, and trashed by investment company. Assets sold off by first week of June.
Ugh. They are the worst things to happen to businesses.
Well damn. I've been using their canned spaghetti sauce for 40 years, it's the best, no frills and inexpensive.
Best canned tomatoes and best ketchup, bar none.
Not enough pork?
Anyone old enough to remember that canned fruit and veg used to be a large section I. The supermarket. Now not more than a couple of shelves.
DelMonte actually tells you where the food comes from. Store brands say "Distributed from...." and name a US city. That's when you know it is from China.
Good to know. I was commenting more of the decline of canned vegetables in general, as frozen and fresh have gained in distribution.
They say frozen actually have more nutrients!
It’s because of the standardization of the cold chain shipping. It’s a great achievement.
And they go from field to freezer quickly!
Seems to be consumer preference. Happing in every country.
Can't wait for the WAPO and NYT to go likewise....they too have been around too long and are no longer relevant or helpful.
Bummer. Many of us have moved to organic and don't buy from main line grocery stores since they are more expensive than say Trader Joe's or value stores like Walmart.
Funny how I don't even need to read the article and can guess it got bought out a while ago (probably private equity) and now...this.
Standby, More of this to come.
Vulture capitalism (aka hedge funds) loading up companies with unrelated debt the. destroying the functioning companies without regard to those negatively impacted. E.g. sears, red lobster, toys r us, the list goes on.
Dont forget they are a major contributor to the unaffordability of housing crisis.
Yep. Already Green Giant's, parent company, B&G, are looking at selling both frozen and canned foods.
*... foods divisions
Private Equity strikes again. Its out of control. Just buying up companies, loading them with debt then milking them for their cash by starving them of investment, cutting costs and firing workers. Once they've been paid back then they leave them to wither and die. Its the next financial calamity.
Without research, that was my first thought too. Private equity has played a HUGE role in surreptitiously ruining this country. An excellent case study for how capitalism has been used against us, while we are simultaneously fed propaganda abt the ills of anything that is not capitalism.
Without the immigrants to pick and process the crops, they are doomed. The food is rotting in the fields. Thanks, Don Old Dipshit!
Binders full of women.
“with the goal of ultimately selling them for a profit. These investments are typically made by private equity firms, who pool capital from investors, such as pension funds, endowments, and high-net-worth individuals.”
Some things should be shielded from the greedy claws of private equity. Housing, food, public transportation such as busses and trains as well as mail. So tired of this bull crap.
And healthcare.
👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
And fire fighters, and fire trucks, and water, and...
Know what? Let’s just do away with private equity. If you have the money to buy a company, you have the money to start a company. And if you can’t? Having money isn’t a skill, so go find one.
Agreed. Way too many people equate having money with having demonstrated some sort of skill, which is manifestly false.
Electricity needs to be public.
Where I live, it is! And the grid is pretty stable under the extreme stress of the summer or the intense storms of winter, and they rapidly respond to the needs of the people within the county. Also also, they have programs that credit owners for upgrading to energy efficient appliances.
Where is that?
Sacramento County
Ours is a co-op. We've been pleased with their communication and quick service after an outage, which is common in rural Alabama. (Lots of trees.) But prices have gone up sharply in the last few months. Similar usage costs 25% more.
The current regime intends for most of our government functions to be privatized. It’s brutal watching our institutions be hollowed out and gifted to oligarchs to monetize for their own profits.
archive.ph/6Cr9M They'll go to the private sector and we'll just hire them back when we need them. April 9, 2025 - The Trump administration warns about efforts by Chinese intelligence to target current and former U.S. federal employees for recruitment. Don't poach my discards, yelled Trump.
It’s gut wrenching to anyone who is watching and understands the implications But I still see MAGA around here cucking for billionaires
That's because anytime calls for any kind of leg up for real people they pull the socialism boogeyman. The happiest and healthiest nations on earth are social democracies. But the oligarchs hate those.
That's because the one thing that all socialist democracies dont have is billionaires. None of them.
And prisons.
KKR's SOP is to buy a company, using that company to borrow the money for the acquisition, suck all the cash out through management fees, and then let it go bankrupt. Del Monte's bankruptcy won't hurt KKR. They've already made their profit.
I thought so 😒
That was 15 years ago. I think there's a SOL on that stuff.
This must make Bezos really hard! (at least chubby, since he can't actually get it up) Now, Amazon can start selling more canned goods (with poisons) to people.
Fuck you and fuck your boss for enabling this shit.
I assume first they drained the assets.
Trump's economy
Cool #Trumppolicies already destroying an American canned foods company Del Monte who had been in the business of feeding Americans for 140 years. Turns out Trump is not so good for American business. Or feeding Americans. Or freedom or people in general. General Trump of the Great American Gestapo
Speakkker Moses Direct Staff Number? 202 225 4000 you're wwwelcome make that go viral where is the viral button?
I will miss their products 😕😕😕
"Del Monte Pacific Ltd., which acquired Del Monte Foods in 2014, had also taken out loans to finance that purchase, adding to its debt burden..."
I was gonna say something about banana republics, but it turns out I was thinking of Dole foods, not Del Monte.
Del monte was there.
A brand that has never comprised their profits to built business. So BYE,BYE.
THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU SELL YOUR PRODUCT AT TWICE THE STORE BRANDS.
Eventually price gouging catches up and the only winners are the couple of CEOs that walk away with the pot.
Let me guess, it was asked to self deport?
Tell Bezos to go fuck himself.
I think people are telling Bezos to fuck off. A recent stop at local Whole Foods, the produce area was looking bleak with moldy rotten fruits and vegetables. Not just one fruit or veg but several and other bins completely empty. Staff was short as well. Still there rotting a few days later.
Greg's been the CEO since 2017, and has decided that now the time is ripe (ahem) for a "Strategic step forward". A bit late for strategic moves Greg.
Trumps economy is destroying the working class through inflation
Make America Great Again…
😳
Considering Del Monte used death squads lik Coke did, this is good.
They could have managed the business issues. It’s the debt from being sold to private equity that killed them. A story we’ve seen many times before.
Stuff was garbage anyway.
I did not have that on my card 😳
According to the company, people "want healthier foods now", so that means they can't deliver and need to declare Bankruptcy? Hmmm.
Any mention of the tariffs on aluminum as a cause???
Sorry, if you price your items .30¢ on avg over your competitors you're bound to lose.
WAPO the major donor to the trump Nazi regime! Who the hell would believe any shit from this traitorous media... Del Monte files for bankruptcy, blames trump’s steel tariffs for rising costs should be the headline Grocery inflation also caused consumers to seek out cheaper store brands.
trump’s 50% tariff on imported steel, which went into effect in June, will also push up the prices Del Monte and others must pay for cans. Based in Walnut Creek, CA ,they also own the Contadina tomato brand, College Inn and Kitchen Basics broth brands and the Joyba bubble tea brand.
Unbelievable. I buy their products.
Venture capital firms use high leveraged capital (Debt). It’s great unless things go south. Then the banks come calling for their money.
Along with Dairy Queen-everyone will be filing!
Oh well
Congratulations, tRump on your winning tariffs plan. The outcome will be everything we have will be made here in the "shithole country" you are making.
Tariffs on agriculture are needed, domestic food production is important for national security. While retaliatory tariffs have played a role the bigger problem is labor costs making imports cheaper. Deportations are going to hurt us BAD, illegal farm workers need to be given a path to citizenship.
As of 2025 around 70% of farm workers in the US are immigrants, 40% of those are illegals. I don't want those people exploited, a path to citizenship would fix that problem but Republicans are too concerned about those people not voting in their favor, plus their voter base is racist.
Just to show why we have to do everything we can to be self sufficient in food production look at China, they are pushing for it HARDCORE because they know being reliant on imported food in a war makes them easier to defeat. So tariffs aren't bad, the deportations are. share.google/CFgiJ29V4U32...
Over 20% of USA agriculture is exported. However, 75% of our total exports went to only 10 markets and nearly half (47%) of our agricultural exports went to only three countries: Mexico, Canada and China. www.fb.org/market-intel/
"certain animal parts, such as beef tongue or chicken feet, are undesirable in the United States, they are delicacies in other cultures, and so add value to U.S. production through trade."
Needs to be laws to prevent businesses being run like this. There will be losses for creditors who acted in good faith and their business will be at risk now, employees.with and uncertain future, probably tax avoidance and a general undermining of society, with wealth leached out to fewer people
Lol private equity strikes again
The man from Del Monte he say, "Oh no."
And less demand for canned goods, the main reason.
Thanks tRumpy dump, great work😱🤬!
The real question is, who puts butter next to the cans in the pantry???
(No paywall) Keep in mind, this includes all the store brands they produce plus it's "the company behind the Del Monte, Contadina, College Inn, Kitchen Basics, JOYBA, Take Root Organics and S&W brands."
It’s those staples have in your pantry that you always need in your pantry. This is really scary.
One factor that isn't discussed in these stories is the rise in quality of store brands. Here in Texas, HEB canned goods are as good or better than name brands. Central Market branded canned goods are better. Much better. The story reads like it's all about finance, but there's so much more here.
Better taste-wise or real quality? because often non brands make up with more water/salt sugar. Not saying its the case but always look at the label and price per lb
Some other long standing companies will fall as well, seeing as how PEOPLE CAN'T AFFORD TO LIVE OR SHOP these days unless they're RICH.
Food scarcity you say?
Echoes of Toys-R-Us
We have one in our town. No one has shown up to work. The migrant camp on site is empty. No one else is interested in pulling the bad beans from the good ones.

Private equity for the kill.
Avoid food in a can Sometimes no choice, but try less
Great! less affordable food for people that need it most. This country sucks today.
Del monte is a racist company, I’m glad their failing 🙌🏿
Wow! That's too bad. Wonder when the United States will have to file for bankruptcy?
I’ve always bought store-brand cans, but even THAT can’t have bankrupted the company— I smell investor games.
Enough of all that winning 🏆
