I am a historian. I look at the primary sources and read them in context. They will forever point to a country caught between the throes of our highest ideals and that America was and is forever defined by slavery. I don't flinch from the truth to save my own feelings or yours.

The American myth was a lie from day 1. Far from the ideals stated poetically in the Declaration: *Only wealthy white men had any rights. *Women were property. *Most of the states had slavery. *The native ppl were moved out and slaughtered. That sure AF isn't everybody born equal.
Either we overcome our rotten foundations or we deserve to be destroyed by them. There is no moral middle ground.
It really did warp our national character most horribly. So many people act unironically like we are the beacon of freedom on the hill while wondering aloud why we are such a violent country.
