You don't have to know all the specifics but the US (usually through the CIA) has fucked with nearly every other country's government over the past century, esp. during the Cold War. Examples: the coup against Allende in 1973, mass killings of communists in Indonesia, attempts to kill Castro, etc.

The Chile example is illustrative of what happens when a nonwestern people democratically decides they want a socialist or social-democratic party in charge: the US (and UK) will step in and aid local reactionaries to violently, undemocratically imposing capitalism back onto them

(pardon the typo here, I meant "to violently...impose capitalism back onto them")

No wonder people living in other countries take interest in following US politics! They haven't been able to escape the US's influence since WW2, it's been the dominant superpower (rivaled only by USSR) for eight decades and its position as uncontested global superpower is only now starting to wane

Contrary to what our government tells us the US has consistently been the enemy of democracy outside of the west, and sometimes in it (look up Operation Gladio). Greasing the wheels of multinational supply chains REQUIRES suppressing the popular will of peoples trapped on fields and in sweatshops

Have you ever wondered why the hell the US considers Saudi Arabia - a theocratic monarchy that ruthlessly suppresses women's rights and religious liberties - a key ally in the Middle East? How does that make any sense if the US's commitment is to democracy? How is Iraq doing 22 years later?
