They might not "know", but they notice, and because it now centres right, many people do not connect with Dems. It is also the reason the Dem top doesn't support new socialist voices. I am from the Netherlands, so here these differences are reflected in different parties and more visual.

yeah basically. the american system is entirely based on vibes and ppl here can feel it even if they haven't been given the vocab to articulate it

Not just the American system, unfortunately, but it is why the Democratic party has such a problem gaining overall support, while the Republicans can just throw some meat at their base, and they are good to go.
