I have worked all my life. Full time. And only once was I in an union. I work for a school. The school is union but the custodians who work at night are contracted n not union. So, don’t say "We", bc many of us are not in unions.

I was self-employed most of my life. When I changed career choices, I joined the union, which let me do good work and protected me from politics. Unions help. My non-union employees liked me because we became cared for family.

I remember my mother telling me she worked FT at a department store before she met my dad. 8+ hours a day M-F, and 4+ hours on Saturday at .50 cents per hour, unpaid breaks if she even got any, no benefits, no paid time off of any kind.

OT was required under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) of 1938, for more than 44 hours, but employers often found ways around of not paying by making deductions from pay for not meeting sales quotas, taking more than 1 bathroom break, cash register shortages levied against the entire dept.

Before 1938, her mom worked at the same department store 6 days a week, 10 hours a day for .25 cents an hour and no OT. Coming in early or staying late to tidy up the store was required and off the clock and not paid.

You're exactly right. Recently spoke with ER doc that works for hospital. They earn no vacation time or sick leave. If they take time off they have to make up hours or just not get paid. I was astounded.

When my father passed away after working at the same company for over 30 years, my older sister’s went to his work to ask for any benefits he might have earned. They said no and didn’t even contribute anything for his burial expenses. This is why unions were formed.
