Every oppressive structure we put in place today, Nigel Farage will be able to use tomorrow. The Democrats made huge mistakes setting up Donald Trump with these unaccountable powers to strip citizenship - we can still fix it here before it's too late!

Developments in both the US and UK are certainly worrying. But whereas in the US the law does not grant discretionary power to the executive to revoke citizenship (other than after detection of fraudulent acquisition) in the UK unfortunately the government has considerable powers to do so.

This does not invalidate your main point: when proposing to expand citizenship stripping powers in the UK, the Labour gov should keep in mind that such powers will also be available to next governments. But on the whole it's the US that should not follow the UK, rather than the other way around.

Get this - they reckon, like the Dems in America, that the right wing won't exploit laws like this because it would be *snort* "unprincipled" 😂

It is staggering that people don't realise that the powers used against Palestine Action today will be used against everyone tomorrow.

Absolutely! In the debates, the question was put a few times whether Palestine Action should be considered in the same category as ISIS or Al-Qaeda. The next debate will ask whether the targeted organisation should be considered in the same category as Palestine Action.

If JSO hadn't wrapped up, they would definitely be next. XR should definitely be worried.

He doesn't have the power to strip citizenship from someone born in the USA according to any US law. He's bullshitting. It's worse in the UK. There is a law!

Can we? I'm not doubting that reducing executive power is a good idea. But my understanding is that: 1) Parliament is sovereign. 2) If a Parliament passes a law to reduce exec power today, and "locks" it for all time. 3) Future parliament can't be sovereign if 2 is true. ...

That is indeed how it works - parliament cannot bind a future parliament. This is why an unwritten constitution is actively dangerous.

So that means any law to strip / reduce executive power today, cam be reverted by PM Farage. Only a widespread constitutional reform can do that, where parliament ceases to be sovereign. Basically we're stuffed.

Fascism works by small steps Leaving authoritarian powers lying about for the next parliament means an authoritarian govt will use those powers as their starting point. Currently, a Farage government has executive powers over protests, trade, food standards and no trial by jury in some cases.

That would still depend on the size of PM Farage’s cabinet, would require him to spend time to pass new bills to reinstate powers. Any extra hurdle in place is better than none

No such power exists. Trump made it up (sadly no guarantee it won't work).
