I had no faith in Starmer's Labour at all and didn't vote for them. But it was such a no-brainer to do this that I simply assumed that they would. That they didn't and we STILL have this same manufactured crisis along with the dangerous debates associated with it makes no sense to me at all.

100% this! The French have offered multiple times to site processing centres in France. Asylum seekers could be pre-screened and given visas to use safe, legal routes to get to the UK and make an asylum claim. Absolutely no more women or children need to die in the channel. Ever.

I think it’s also so important to explain why people are taking these channel crossings, because your counterpart made out it was because people knew they’d be rejected if they applied to come to the UK in some other way. This isn’t why most people take these routes.

Hasn’t the recent government statement announced that asylum seekers can apply on line , and have proof of identity and country of origin ? Their case will then be processed . Written right at the bottom of the gov edict ….i will recheck .
I’ve since read that yes, this government have stated that people in France wishing to seek U.K asylum can now apply online, with the recent announcement of the “One in one out” scheme. There are strict criteria to the new scheme. So you were correct, Jayanne.
As far as I’m aware, the only way to apply for asylum in the U.K. currently, is to be here on U.K. soil to do so. There is no way to apply for asylum here from outside the U.K. years ago, people seeking Asylum here could apply for a Humanitarian Visa, from a foreign embassy. Then come here safely.

Finger printing and even a DNA swab I would find acceptable as a requisite of pre-registration to detect anyone who had tried and failed then tried again. Hardly a breach of human rights. I suspect some may disagree of course and are right to have their own opinion.

Didn't the French offer to provide housing and offices classed as british soil, so that asylum claims could be processed in France. Those successful could then travel on a visa to the UK, those unsuccessful the French would process. But the UK refused the offer, afterall it would have meant...
...actually processing asylum applications and their mates would not have been able to cash in on fiv accommodation contracts. Then there is the little matter that a number would die on the crossing, which to the gov is also a win. ...

Good points, well made, Zoe. It’s rare that I hear this suggestion of safe routes. When I explain it, I then add: IF anyone still crosses the channel when there is a clear safe, alternative option, then the government would be in a much stronger legal position to remove them.
