And the reason for this was that the bureaucracy involved with either of these was more costly than just dealing with the thing ourselves. The systems functioned very poorly.

Is that our bureaucracy or the EU regulations themselves? I remember when Theresa May began enforcing medical costs on migrants not entitled to free medical care, it became very obvious that we previously had no system in place at all, so there was no way recoverable EU costs were being recovered.

Obviously, there's a question about whether we want to be a society that gate-keeps medical care in such a way at all, but we're now in a position where we have medical gatekeeping that affects genuine migrants and British citizens with difficult surnames and no returns agreement with all of the EU.
