Oh, the BBC doesn't need to be reminded - they know - they are close enough to opinions left and right to be aware of this. The more salient question is, why do they keep saying what they know to be incorrect? And is there an answer other than, "They are a component of right wing propaganda"?

One meagre nugget of positivity is that I'm hearing people inaccurately using this term being picked up on it more frequently now. Matthew Wright always does on his LBC show, as do a couple of others on that station. CH4 News frequently do. I've largely given up on the BBC.

The BBC are technically correct in saying when people arrive irregularly that, prior to claiming asylum, they are arriving illegally under the UK law. Once they claim asylum, which I presume all do, they are protected by the 1951 convention. The point is moot but it is true whilst also misleading.

But it’s a cynically disingenuous position to take. The government (I use this like “monarchy” - same institution regardless of the incumbent) closed off all legal routes to apply for asylum & then passed the Illegal Migration Act 2023 making irregular entry illegal. What are they supposed to do? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Oh I agree with every word of your reply but the BBC, as cynical and disingenuous as they appear to be, are technically correct which would be their response should they see fit to address the criticism.

Irregular migrants and irregular migration are close enough to the correct terms anyway (the correct terms being irregular immigrants and irregular immigration respectively).

Right. I didn’t know this. But now you say it, it sounds very plausible, so it’s even more depressing that the terms aren’t more widely used by responsible parties in journalism and politics.

Unfortunately these who have a vested interest in maintaining the 'illegal immigrant' idea appear to be a lot louder than those who just want a fair immigration system. So very few people do actually know that there are only two forms of immigration, regular (via visas) and irregular.

It's quite something to see TV presenters, newspaper editors, columnists, politicians, etc, all manufacturing a new reality, one siloed away from actual reality. They don't seem to care it could get people hurt or killed.

Stop watching BBC. I have after 50 years. It has become a fanzine for Farage and Reform plc. Their ' reporters' are little more than ciphers for the Right - eg CMason. Unless and until Lisa Nandy emerges from hiding and does something, about it, will continue to be a PR unit for Farage.

Nandy is part of Starmer's Tories, no chance there.
