Erosion of human rights always begins by targeting marginalised groups, because it's (sadly) easier to do, but it _always_ leads to erosion of human rights for all. Trump and the GOP didn't put the military onto the streets of cities in blue states in his first term - he's doing it now, though.
Sadly, there are many who are fine with losing some of their rights as long as it disproportionately affects those they're constantly told are less worthy, less human than they are. That is why we have a 2nd Trump term, and it will be why Reform wins the next GE - if Labour doesn't change course.

This argument that everything has changed looks very weird, until one realises that they don't mean people aren't being persecuted any more, but that it's too easy now for persecuted people to seek refuge in affluent, largely peaceful nations like ours.
Every poor country in the world was once a colonial property, most of which were British at some point. This is the consequences of centuries of oppression coming home to roost. 🤷
So what they are contending is that, if the creators of the '51 Convention, the ECHR etc, had realised how many non-European people had been able to take advantage of those protections at that time, they'd not have opened the doors to anyone.
