My mom wants a new dog and one thing no one mentions about parenting your parents is you have to be the bad guy and tell an old lady she can’t get a puppy

My parents got two goldendoodle puppies despite me yelling at them repeatedly not to- 3 years later they still have obnoxious energy and my folks aren’t in physical shape to give them the walks they need. 🙄 They’re good dogs but little hellbeasts when they’re out of their crates.
I wanted a goldendoodle bc they are super cute but I guess they can be a bit of a nightmare. If we ever get another dog, and hopefully not for a while, I need a lazy one!
Aw, they are so pretty!
at least it’s a puppy, mine keeps asking me for a grandbaby still
Oof. I remember those days. Luckily, a cancer scare leading to a hysterectomy has freed me from those expectations and I am definitely not mad about it!
I think this is a large reason why my sister has been bringing her cat over to our parents' house.
That’s really nice of her. Does the cat like it tho
She's been bringing her over since she was a kitten so I believe so.
That is really sweet and a what a good idea to start when kitty was little
Yesterday she found a border collie online. I was able to say no pretty firmly bc they are extremely active (our senior dog who sleeps all day is the right speed for us lol) So I said, maybe something like a pug or a basset hound. So guess what she is showing me today? Yep. Basset hounds
A pug or a Basset hound. 🤣 Quite a bit of size difference here.
I just researched “friendly lazy dogs” and those were on the list lol
My parents (both seniors) had a border collie. And a border collie/sheltie cross. Probably two of the more hyper dogs you can get, but they had a blast. Both dogs got them out and more active and social (especially my mom) and the dogs were spoiled rotten so of course they loved it 😂
Aw. That’s great! They are good dogs, extremely loyal. We had one for a long time which I think is why mom wanted another one. But we aren’t up to that level of activity now. And i swore I would never get another one lol
I think pets are good for seniors. But we have a dog, two cats, and 5 chickens!
Oh I’m glad the issue is “too many” instead of “none.” My mom and dad got a senior dog as my dad was winding down to the end (dementia, Parkinson’s, etc) and it made those last few years so much happier. Dad would forget us kids, he’d even forget mom, but he always remembered that silly old fluff.
I’m glad he such a good experience with his little buddy. Yeah, I think it is good for them to have pets. But we definitely don’t need any new ones rn.
Chickens are also an underrated amount of work to care for 😑
Sooo much work. They get up super early and can squeeze out of even teeny tiny holes in their fence! But it was nice when egg prices were a zillion dollars
I don’t miss having to carry big buckets of water every morning
Aw, I wish I could have chickens! Unfortunately they're not permitted in Philly, and also my dog would really REALLY like for me to bring chickens home, but for... other reasons.
We are allowed to have chickens as long as none are roosters. And yes, this is one reason why I don’t want another dog. The one we have leaves the chickens alone and I do not look forward to having to train a new one that chickens are friends not food
Your dog sounds very good. 🙂
The more I think about training a new dog the more I realize I need to be less critical of our current dog lol (he does bark at ghosts)
Also a Fun Philly Fact is that there was a city council member who was going to propose a repeal of the ordinance against domestic chickens, but he got indicted on corruption charges before he could do so, because of course he did.
Oh boo
Aw. What a sweetie
He sits outside our window waiting patiently for us to come out and play with him
Any chance you could interest her in a pre-owned dog? By that point their puppy-ness is usually worn off and shelters usually have a good sense of personality too. Having said all that, since your home is hardly pet deficient, I 100% support you in standing firm against any additions.
We are shelter only animal adopters! These are shelter puppies she is looking at. Personally, I don’t want any, but if we ever get another one I’d prefer a senior dog.
The origin of the word “propound “.
Maybe we could get one of them to fetch a hyphen.
Or at least middle-aged!
As a medical professional, let me quote (re: make up) a statistic about how many senior citizens have falls and break hips that are caused by puppies. Bassett Hounds are the worst as they can be somewhat immovable objects
That’s the one problem we have with our dog rn. He is always in the way, bless his little heart
If nothing else, Kitty is very glad you made that decision so she doesn’t have to share her snacks.
This was another reason I don’t want a puppy. These cats have been through it and are just beginning to get comfortable and relaxed with us.
Oh yeah, have had this conversation.
It made me feel mean. But I know I am right :/
I am very much in bad guy territory over some things, and it isn't fun, sympathetic head nods to you.
And to you ❤️
