I do kind of wonder if giving Colbert such a long goodbye is leaving open the option to change their mind once the merger is done, and in the event Trump's current unchecked power is somewhat dimmed by his cascade of mental, physical, and political issues.

Keep in mind that it's not just him losing his job, it's everyone who works for that program, and some of them might not weather the fall as easily, financially speaking.

There's probably contractual issues with shutting down the show without cause. And yes, the new owners can decide to reestablish the show once the merger completes. Of course, this now leaves the option for the DoJ to not approve the merger for over a year. Which is not what Paramount wants.
