It will be 50 years in November since the Fitzgerald went down. I have been to the shipwreck museum at Whitefish point where the bell from the ship is displayed.

That's really cool. Where is Whitefish point?

It's in the upper peninsula of Michigan, on the south shore of Lake Superior. Not too far from Whitefish Bay, which is referred in the song. Several years ago the original bell was retrieved and a bell with the crew's name on it was placed in the wreck.

It's up at Paradise, so it's not on US 2 or 28, Which both run east-west across the UP. It sits right off Lake Superior. In fact, after touring it that day, I waded a little into Lake Superior.

Very cold waters. It can freeze over in the winter, and the water temperature doesn't rise much in the summer.

I've spent a lot of time in northern Ontario. Highway 17 runs along the northern edge of Lake Superior. The views are breathtaking.
