I detasseled corn and bailed hay for 1 summer in Indiana in high school. then I said fuck this and went to college. And I was a varsity football player used to hours long practice in heat 90% humidity. Good luck getting those rascal 30yr olds in the mom’s basement to do this shit for poverty wages.

Not to mention most Americans can’t afford to commit to seasonal employment.

I bailed hay and milked cows as a kid. No fucking way will you be getting 99% of people to do that job. Moving a few thousand bails of hay in a hot hay mow for 12 hours? 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Never

I worked in Indiana & Ohio too! I started as a 10 yr old girl! All hands count. Crops are all that counts without them no $$$ to plant for next season. Fields by season etc NON-STOP!

Wait until Trump declares that the National Police control all of these immigrants and put them to slave working. In other words doing the same jobs that they are doing now but under the control of the federal government. Why? Because without them the white man will starve.

Thats exactly what they'll do. Lots of states already use prison slave labor

I am not completely opposed to paying a low wage to prison inmates, and having them do work, would be significantly better for them than sitting in a cell. Problem is everything is always taken advantage of and private prisons will exploit it like crazy!

👍'Indentured servitude' was very much a British colonial thing that was applied in the 13 Colonies, and replaced by 'transportation' as part of the gradual process of slavery being outlawed throughout the Empire. FWIW by 1776 it was already illegal for anyone to remain a slave in Britain itself.

One of the neglected ways of explaining why the USA's Revolutionary War happened (rather than a peaceful, compromise solution, like Canadian or Australian Independence) is that getting 'representation' in Parliament would not have helped preserve slavery.

Similarly, the First Nations to the West of the Appalachians had treaties with the British Monarch, that British governments had to uphold or not subject to votes in Parliament. Much more convenient to be able agree/ignore/break deals to not colonise the whole way to the Pacific as a 'new country' 🤷‍♂️

I’d honestly never thought about from that perspective (preservation of slavery with regards to British law) but that makes a lot of sense

It's a bit of 'foreseeable-hindsight' but religiously-driven popular sentiment and increasing numbers of 'liberal' MPs in Britain were already set on an anti-slavery course. Sending pro-slavery MPs from some of British-America not paying all British taxes would have been unlikely to change that.

Sorry, taxation was also not a clear-cut issue. The British government was using increased taxation wherever it could to pay down the National Debt incurred in the '7 Years War' against France. The 13 Colonies were objecting to paying less tax than the actual British for being made much more secure

In short 'No Taxation Without Representation' was a pro-rebellion slogan that ignored the fact that having representation and being taxed accordingly was not something that the revolutionaries would have agreed to.
