His net worth is mostly in stock that virtually everyone agrees is ridiculously overvalued. If any loans for which it’s collateral are called in, its value will drop by an order of magnitude. So take the worth of his TSLA shares and divide it by 10 to get his real-world net worth.

That’s something pretty specific to Musk and TSLA too; even when significantly overvalued, most publicly traded companies aren’t overvalued to such an extreme degree. TSLA’s PE of 140 should be close to Ford’s 7.05, Toyota’s 7.56, Honda’s 6.88, etc. Or even Apple’s 35.5 (normal for a tech company).
