Yes, but that was supposed to happen. It was the midterms. And yet it wasn’t nearly as brutal as 2018, 2014, 2010 or 2006 had been for the in-party. (One reason, I think, for fact that Biden tried to cling on, which actually was desastrous for the Dems.)
Conservative voters show up just the same amount of people in midterms as they do on the presidential elections. It's Democrats that don't show up. If Democrats were consistent with their voting habits, our presidents wouldn't lose power two years into their term and we'd get more accomplished.
Dems tune out for midterms in general. Which means democratic presidents usually only have two years to get any legislative agenda passed, and the Republicans can spend two years getting more entrenched. This is a problem
True. But this pattern is slowly changing. Dem voters start to recognize how important down-ballot and midterms and even off-year elections are. And: 2018 was a desaster for Trump. I’m banking on 2026 being the same. It’s what keeps me going.
