in retrospect OceanGate should've just built the whole sub out of rachet straps

I have been purposefully avoiding this bc other than the kid who died, who cares about a bunch of rich idiots? Anyways, finally saw pics of the sub & holy shit, do you have to be a special kind of stupid to get in that thing & think it was going to be sound going down thousands of feet

Now what? @nowwhat2024.bsky.social

I expected there’d be a design flaw (think Challenger o-ring). What I didn’t expect was a narcissistic cult leader who bullied people into creating a death trap —knowingly! Usually these exposes feature at least some employees who believed in the person or their mission. They hated this guy!

Some, I think, were afraid of what he would do if they left. Many did leave. Others were whistleblowers. Those who stayed paid the ultimate price. One young woman was scared because it was Covid and she feared she wouldn’t get another job.

As someone who went through engineering school, it is genuinely fun for me to observe how people who know nothing about engineering wonder about how other people who know nothing about engineering think about engineering. I’m not shitting you here: it is legit fascinating.

Now what? @nowwhat2024.bsky.social

I’m not sure I follow what you’re saying? True, I am not an engineer. I restated what I saw in the documentary. My initial post was that, heading into the film I expected an honest attempt to design something innovative and what I found was a man who was a criminal with no regard for others’ lives.

Now what? @nowwhat2024.bsky.social

I expected it was going to be a failed mission because of an honest attempt to engineer something that ended up going tragically wrong. What I didn’t expect was the total lack of care and concern for human life. From the get go, he was he’ll bent on making it happen and didn’t follow the rules.

Jamey @klocktower.org

The initial reporting on the implosion event included reports of how lots of the engineers originally hired had either quit or been fired, and how everyone who actually knew anything about how to create a deep-sea exploration vessel was begging that guy to listen to them.

Jamey @klocktower.org

I think my point was, it was never any honest attempt to actually engineer a deep-sea exploration vessel. And I think it says something about our world today: We keep assuming that institutional systems will keep things working okay, while rich assholes keep ignoring those systems & breaking shit.

Jamey @klocktower.org

Sorry, I realize I wasn't coherent there, and that it probably came off poorly. The engineering angle on that whole project was that it went against almost all engineering standards, and everyone knew it. There's a multi-step process to designing things, but the "innovation" here was to skip that.

What I wonder is why people in engineering are so into themselves that they have to pop up in any discussion and say “strange, you obviously are not engineers and know nothing about engineering yet you are discussing engineers. Fascinating.”

Indeed: my career hasn’t been in engineering, and instead I’ve been a high school teacher (with some evidence to suggest that I’m a really good high school teacher). Sorry to have annoyed you by pointing out that engineering is, um, a discipline, with its own internal sets of standards, I guess.

Anyway, my sense of it is that you were very much trying to be an asshole to me, and maybe I’m wrong about that, but I’ll reiterate that I wasn’t trying to be an asshole. Engineers are taught to think about how the world works in ways that are weird. That can indeed be fascinating.
