no one made that claim. all I am saying is that people proposing gun control regulations should have a legal and technical understanding that allows them to avoid just creating new loopholes

Ok, so what's your rough sketch of what gun control laws and regulations look like? We get that "it's complicated." Where do you, individually, come down?

It is also the case that we already routinely legislate the control of technologies that the people making the decisions do not understand. Why is the case that for firearms the people making the decision should know that technology more than any other technology they legislate on?

I actually agree, though, that it would be ideal for our lawmakers and elected officials to have significantly higher levels of education on all fronts. As someone who was scared of guns, my first step in removing that fear was to take a firearms safety course to understand them.

But if we ask a Republican official to take a course in science that might ruffle their little delicate emotional attachments to their childhood belief systems there's no way we could make it happen simply because they don't wanna and evidence doesn't sway idiots.

I for one find firearms fascinating in the same way I find any technology fascinating, but at the same time, despite obvious applications of firearms outside of murdering human beings, the escalation of the technology largely often only being used for that purpose is an ongoing problem.

And as someone who has argued that a rock or knife or car can kill a man as easily as a gun, none of them are designed to do that. And with cars, as with guns, while not designed for killing people, they can be used for exactly that and for mass killing.

I suspect we could legislate AI control of cars against killing people and get both parties on board, but guns... the whole point of owning those for most people now seems to be "Well, you know... in case I need to murder a guy."

Nevertheless, an argument is being made here for legislating in such a way for that thing's continued existence. Frankly, that America can't do gun control like Australia after their incident simply lends continued credence to the unethical manifest destiny narrative that we're "special".
