The changes in the last 30 years have been dramatic. We had a tornado (unwarned) in 1998. My neighborhood was where the damage reports first showed up. These days, the meteorologists tell us live that they see rotation on radar and to take shelter.

Few people are aware that most weather forecasting for news channels and other organizations comes from NOAA. When DOGE striped out funding for NOAA, the weather forecasting accuracy fell dramatically.

I can feel it already. I own a small bakery, and we’re in one local outdoor farmers’ market, and we supply the grocery store on Bald Head Island, NC. The weather affects how much we bake, or if we bake, for the local market, and when to deliver to Bald Head. I also fear hurricane season in general.

NWS is under NOAA in Dept of Commerce, which was targeted by DOGE for cuts. Several senior mets took early retirement offer (5 at my local WFO); the remaining may be subject to summary cuts. They are not done.
