We like to say "therapy" and move on; pretending that we're so enlightened that we don't stoop to incarceration. But the truth is, therapy isn't a quick fix, and meanwhile victims are piling up. But if we're going to incarcerate people for fraud, we should start with the Con-man in Chief!

What are you talking about? Who has just said "therapy" and moved on? The idea is to *actually begin to address issues that lead to crime.* Not just say the things. And "victims are piling up" sounds a lot like rhetoric used by people who want to pretend crime is up and we need more cops and jails.

Re: victims piling up, I was speaking of the individual repeatedly committing id theft. Cops on the street bullshit doesn’t address that. I don't have an answer. Clearly, swinging door incarceration isn't stopping it. It doesn't seem to merit a life sentence, but victims 4,5,6, & 7 may disagree.

"Swinging door incarceration" is a wild thing to say about a system that imprisons more people per capita than any other prison system in the world. At any rate, increasing sentencing has never shown to reduce crime or recidivism, so maybe we should try addressing material conditions instead.

ID theft isn't impulsive, and culprits aren't low IQ. Another poster suggested therapy. In general, we, as a society, use "therapy" like it's magic dust. Like we think criminals will just walk into a few sessions and come out "fixed."

It also isnt violent. It's property crime.

It's not violent, but it's not victimless either. It's all well and good to say "it's just property" when it's not YOUR property.

I didn't say "it's just property." I haven't diminished the problems brought about by identity theft at all. I do separate violent crime and property crime when talking about incarceration, though, since the whole point of locking people up should be to keep people safe, not things.

There is no number of years you can put someone in prison, with no real effort to address whatever led to the crime in the first place, and expect them to just do better when they get out. So are we to lock them up forever?

"Another poster suggested therapy." 1. That poster was me. 2. I said INTENSIVE therapy AND PROFESSIONAL SUPPORT. You know, to deal with the obvious issues and help the person stop their behavior. But you saw "therapy" and went off on a wild tear over shit literally no one said, ya fuckin weirdo.

That person really just saw “therapy” and tuned out literally everything else around it, god damn. I’m so embarrassed for him.

Bro really saw the word “therapy” and it triggered his pro-cop sleeper agent side.
