I’ve started playing extremely dramatic classical music like Holst’s Mars, Bringer of War instead of Raffi when feeding my baby and it has made it like 700% funnier. She likes its I like it more than Raffi. 11/10 recommend.

I would circumsize myself with a rusty can before listening to Raffi.
Aw, I actually do like Raffi. I wouldn’t listen to it on my own, but they’re fun to sing along to with a baby.
I was trapped on a car ride with my aunt and very young cousin. At the time, I was a teenager. Raffi was on for 2 hours. Never again.
See, this is where autism has primed me to be a good parent. I can listen to the same song or watch the same movie over and over and over and over again, no problem.
Prokofiev, Suite No. 1, Romeo and Juliet, Op. 1: Death of Tybalt. Takes a great turn toward the end with a superior burping rhythm. (Flew back to the US from London recently with Raffi’s Everything Grows stuck in my head; had been feeding my new grandson a lot during August.)
Adding Prokofiev’s Dance of the Knights, which is my husband’s ringtone on my phone. (He is recently retired from a symphony orchestra’s brass section.)
For the cluster feeding frenzy, “Winter” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.
We are past cluster feeding and into teething. 😱
My sympathies. Frozen bagels FTW.
I think your baby would like Mahler
(If you don't, Bernstein's Candide is pretty dramatic)
Bluey: sleepytime. Trust me.
Came here to say exactly this. Got our 2.5 yr old the hardcover book of the episode recently -- fantastic investment ♥️
We’re not doing TV yet/I think she’s still too little for Bluey, but I am honestly looking forward to it. I’ve watched it with my friends’ kids and it’s actually really enjoyable (and has good messages!)
How about some Kronos Quartet playing Black Angels? 🤣 Always wondered if you took a baby and told them minor = relaxed, diminished 7th = happy, major = scary, and augmented = sad if they would develop different emotional associations and responses to those triads.
Some Prokofiev might be nice too 😜
We’ve listened to Peter and the Wolf, just not during meal times.
How come you're doing the extremely dramatic classical music? What makes it funny?
That is fabulous! Might I recommend O Fortuna from Orff's Carmina Burana?
I got the privilege of playing "Mars" in my seventh grade symphonic band class. Cheers!
Yeah I think this is why I was a jazz and classical music baby/small child. It did seem to actually cheer me up and was more fun for my folks.
(There was a Dinner Jazz show on the local jazz radio station when I was little and my parents discovered that letting me listen to it when going to sleep was a good way to get me to go to bed and bedtime)
It turns out that babies also like music that *isn’t* super annoying!
@raffic.bsky.social needs to know this and process the implications!
Are you snitch tagging me to Raffi?? Bluesky is wild.
Raffi needs to pivot!
Sir, you are a Canadian icon and were a huge part of my childhood. I mean no disrespect. I just think it’s funnier to feed my baby mushed up green beans with a different soundtrack.
Any Raffi shout out is a positive thing! And never forget "there were beans, beans, trying on their jeans in the corner grocery store!"
Willoughby Wallaby Woo is my favorite because when I sing it with my daughter I can add the names of people we know.
Fact: were it not for Raffi, I wouldn't be who I am today Fact: you never see Raffi's palms in any of his early vhs videocassettes !
We’re going to listen to Copeland tomorrow.
Fanfare for the Common Man
Strauss’s Thus Spake Zarathustra
Mussorgsky, "Night on Bald Mountain" and "The Hut on Hen's Legs"
Yesssss
We played Stones music to our son. He ended up drummer in a grunge band but is now IT support for NHS. 🎶💻🤷♂️
the videos must be hysterical! My son often wore more of his meals than he ever ate. the walls and ceilings were proof!
Did I buy a used copy of the original Fantasia on vinyl and have it shipped from Australia for exactly this purpose? Yes. But it was worth it.
Bach and B.B King are big hits in our house!
Symphonie Fantastique. Rite of Spring. Sorcerers Apprentice.
Symphonie Fantastique and Rite of Spring are a little hornier than what I’m going for, I think.
Noted!
But if you do want good kid music, go for Tom Chapin, never Raffi. I was married to a concert pianist, lots of classical in the house.
Play Rossini's The Thieving Magpie, and your baby will love it
Carmina Burana Night on Bald Mountain Danse Macabre 1812 Overture Rite of Spring & Firebird Suite
i don't really remember any lullabies so when my kid was a baby i just sang him like, Smells Like Teen Spirit and Baby One More Time
Can’t believe nobody mentioned The Ride of the Valkyries or the finale to the 1812 Overture, but I’m plugging my personal favorite (and Keith Emerson inspiration), the Troika movement from Prokofiev’s Lieutenant Kijé.
