It’s just like when kids sit down at the dinner table and have to wait until everyone is seated before dinner begins. It’s just good manners. Before anyone can object, wolves in the wild have a hierarchical eating pattern and they too wait to get the ok from the alpha.

We don’t know what the situation was that led to that particular training. From experience I can say that in a canine pack there can be one pig who bolts his food and then goes after others. Maybe a fight over food led to injuries. We don’t know, so we can’t judge.
