A few recurring themes I noticed are that everyone who leaves for greener pastures soon returns despite the city's problems; nativism and nepotism are a major reason why problems are never solved; and the city loves its music but treats its musicians terribly.

Oh yes, agreed. I identified with the Jeannette storyline when I left after Ida. Things got hard, I decided it was best to leave before I hated the city (& while I had an opportunity) in case I ever had the chance to come back. Even if I’m not here the rest of my life, this place is always a home.

Maybe the point is New Orleans is the devil you know, which is preferable to a mediocre life. You can dream here. Not too many other places have that.
