There are first-generation immigrants from Mexico who consider themselves "real Americans" (because they are) and they aren't comfortable with, nor do they appreciate, someone flying a Mexican flag in the context of supporting immigration.

No, he has actually been very clear that he is not saying that. He is saying that if Trump is saying we are being invaded for foreign nationals, flying a foreign flag during a protest, helps delver Trumps message. Why would we want to help Trump with his lies and propaganda?
